they can be broken down to their simplest features

Jade: Large round glasses and buck teeth with long dark hair. associated with green

Rose: Goth with light hair and headband. associated with purple

Dave: Short light hair, shades and red association.

John: short dark hair. buck teeth. rectangular glasses and associated with blue.

These are the simplest elements in terms of their character design. As long as they have these features (though colour association is optional) they can be identified. Though it makes it all the more funny when a character has them and ISNT them like that blue guy from that ice skating anime that looks a lot like john.
