Right now this movie is struggling and is so far Laika’s weakest opening despite an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A rating on CinemaScore.
- Although the main lead being male, this movie is packed with well done, strong, female characters of all ages and personality types from villains to caring mothers.
-Despite most advertisements, the character of Kubo is not hyper masculine and eager to whip out a sword, he’s incredibly endearing, emotional, and a borderline pacifist [seriously he is a sweetheart].
-Is incredibly well animated and Laika is one of the very few animation studios that use stop motion. In Two Strings, they animate everything from specs of gravel to powerful oceans to 16 foot skeleton entities. If you need any further proof of the hard work that went into this film please watch this video that shows the sheer amount of craft that goes into the production of stop motion.
-Set in Japan, the scenery, clothing, and music was all done very well.
[ you can view stills of the set that show off it’s stylized architecture and other scenery here ]
I adore so much that stop motion animation studios are still out there. Furthermore, happiness for The Book of Life’s gorgeous Mexican themes and my hope for Moana still lingers and I would want nothing more than for other studio’s to be encouraged to explore more diverse cultures and backgrounds.
I know ya’ll want this too so come on kiddos, we can do this.
Thank you for reading.
