if a marginalized group is “represented” in a form of media & that “representation” makes them uncomfortable then its not representation and maybe you should listen to what that group has to say? just a suggestion
One of my favorite things about Overwatch is how Blizzard just decided it wanted to hit literally every fantasy trope ever while maintaining a futuristic theme, whether they could figure out a way to explain them or not. Dwarf? Make him a Swedish builder with dwarfism. Angel? Easy, doctor in an outfit with wings and a staff. Next. Knight? Idk, theres this german with a rocket hammer?? Cowboy? Something something gang something something mid-west something something revolver……………. Monk? A robot. Make him a fucking robot. A fucking robot monk you heard me. Dragon Ninja Samurai?? Fuck you?? Fuck you!!!!!
If I’m doing something wrong, don’t suddenly expect me to walk into a room and go “Oh shoot, I did a wrong. I should have used the green bottle to clean that instead of the blue bottle.” Because guess what, I didn’t know that, and I likely never will unless somebody tells me.
People don’t learn things by magically walking into a room. And I deal very poorly with vague instructions. “Clean sink” doesn’t register to me as “Make sure to also put shaving cream on the mirror to give it a better shine.” or something like that.
What, I’m supposed to know everything about cleaning just because I’m 23? What if I’ve been cleaning the wrong way all this time and nobody wanted to hurt my feelings? It happens. Stop dancing around the subject and going “Maybe you’ll notice three things.” Guess what, I did not. I DID not notice three things, now I feel stupid and angry. Congrats. People who feel stupid and angry don’t want to do stuff now.
