What’s so cringeworthy about a social phenomenon with millions and millions participating, where there are billions of references, jokes, art and stories shared among participants? what would you call that?
“matpat gave the pope undertale” sounds way different than “matpat met the pope while representing the YouTube gaming community and it’s customary to give the pope a gift that’s reflective of the culture your represent and he chose undertale, a game about choices, consequences and reflect and peace/love”
Yeah, “matpat met the pope while representing the YouTube gaming community” is actually even more ridiculous so I’m not sure context makes this one better
yeah all that stuff op said is good and all until you add “except the pope doesn’t have a computer” at which point MatPat basically just gave him a string of characters
Except mat pat pointed out the pope probably won’t play it and that it’s a symbolic gesture
You wouldn’t tell someone to read your favorite book and just give them the cover. It has just as much meaning as an unusable steam code
No, it’s more like giving them a book that has some significance in bringing representation to a group knowing they will likely leave it on their shelf the whole time.
Yeah, a book could contain a complete summation of human history but if it goes unread then it serves the same value as a rectangular rock
Unless you let them know what it represents. Also, this isn’t just some person, this is the guy who threw out a golden throne for a regular chair. I’m pretty sure he’s all for symbolism

trislosher-nouveau asked: question: are you implying that YouTube gaming is a culture?
I don’t see why not. YouTube is one of the largest social media sites and the gaming side is big enough to warrant its own sister site. It’s about as much of a culture as tv. Of course, you could always sound like old people and say things like “oh nothing on the internet is real whatever” because you always know how that will turn out.

You could replace Undertale with “Walmart giftcard” here and it would still carry the same weight as the original post.
How does a Wal-Mart gift card reflecting the YouTube gaming community
Because with a Walmart giftcard the Pope can buy his own game based on a loose understanding of morality and “mercy.” For instance, Pokemon Omega Ruby.
So rather than give him a game to reflect the gaming community, you would give him a card that doesn’t really mean anything?

I mean… it makes sense that way but the thing about it is even with the logic behind it it’s still fucking batshit insane. And the worst part is I see the logic. undertale is a good game to give the pope because pacifism is an option. but it’s not like the pope is gonna play it,and more over you could have given him any of a dozen other games which don’t have violence.
And in the video, mat pat pointed out that the pope probably won’t play it and that it’s more of a symbolic gesture

Anonymous asked: Stop defending matpat, it's cringey and embarrassing, just like what he did.
I’m just providing context to the situation. He was chosen to represent a gaming community and had to give the pope a gift to reflect it.

People are so desperate to hate on game theory
I dont really get why people hate him so much. I mean sure a lot of his theories are stretches or obviously wrong. But they’re the kinds of things that are fun/interesting to think about, even if it is just to dismiss as wrong. Besides, who among us hasnt come up with or embraced an absurdly implausible headcanon at least once in our lives?
And frankly, I watched his video on giving the Pope Undertale, and I agree with most of what he said. I dont really understand why the Pope was meeting with representatives of Youtube, but thats not MattPat’s problem.
Because whenever they hear something about him it’s usually from people who don’t like his theories. They never actually watched his show so they assume he just talks out of his ass. And admittedly, there are a few times he has done that. But because they only hear people not liking his theories, they assume a majority of his videos are bad. Ironically enough, his video about the pope was about this very subject. So really, they are proving his point.
