a lot of modern pig designs can be still traced back to inspiration from disney’s 3 little pigs
first of all, its important to see what real pigs look like,
right off the bat we can see that pigs are BIG. a peeve of mine is constantly seeing cartoon pigs as small, they really arent..
the biggest thing people mess up is the head shape and snout. a standard farm pig’s head is very triangular, its almost like a crescent really. but instead everyone gives them sphere head with a pig nose like a piggy bank. its really irritating.
i honestly kind of enjoy the pigs from shrek because they were given pretty realistic bodies for once.
JOWLS. pigs can have some really pronounced jowls and fatty cheeks, i like the pig villagers in kung fu panda for that
and its also on the ladies which is good
another pig i like is napoleon from animal farm because they gave him canine fangs that pigs do have, i like him a lot
finally, VARIETY. there are countless breeds of pigs, not just american landrace, use them!
In terms of the gender divide in character design, I guess the question that’s forever been in my mind is, “If there was a character as gross as Murdoc Niccals, but a woman, would she ever be as well received and beloved by fandom?”
I legit had an experience during a character design class where I designed a grody punk girl character (I even toned her down from her initial design where she was even grosser) and when I presented her to class I was told she was “unappealing” and when I asked if they meant she we unappealing because she was gross and grody or because it was a bad design, I was never given a straight answer by ANYONE in class. I even specifically brought up Murdoc as proof it’s possible to make an appealing grody character, and I think it put my teacher into a bit of a tailspin.
fun studying tip: if you’re a procrastinator, play tom jones’s “what’s new pussycat” on repeat while writing your papers and do not turn it off until you are finished, it will motivate you to finish that essay as quickly as possible
make sure to throw one “it’s not unusual” in the middle while u take ur quick snack break
