How it Probably Happened

Bob the animator: “Ok, so, there’s gonna be a broken piece of a sign that says ‘KL’ on it. Can you draw that?”

Frank the animator: “Yeah, sure, how’s this look?”

Bob the animator: “Well, if it was ACTUALLY a broken piece of a sign that says ‘Klondike,’ it wouldn’t have a big gap after the letters, but whatever. We can fix it in the closeup.”

Frank the animator: “Uh… ok. Shouldn’t I change it in the first shot?”

Bob the animator: “Nah, leave it, but give the new one some wood texture, and make it smaller… oh, and change the lengths of the spikes. The kids won’t notice.”

image

Frank the animator: “More like this?”

Bob the animator: “Yeah, yeah! And for the final scene, make it REALLY big, and remove the texture, and… heck, make it two spikes instead of three. Two is better.”

image

Frank the animator: “Alright, it’s done. Are you sure no one will ever notice all these haphazard, illogical changes?”

Bob the animator: “Yeah! I mean, what, do you think someone’s gonna take photos and put them on a blog with 3,500 followers some day? That would be ridiculous.”

Why “Educate Yourself” rubs me the wrong way

adurot:

thedenofravenpuff:

Don’t get me wrong. One should be able to pursuit research and information on their own.

But there has been times I’ve felt the phrase being misused, especially when followed by “it’s not my job to educate you.”

Why not? If you possess the information the other person lack, why not share it? To help someone learn and get rid of ignorance you might as well. I can see situations where it does apply, like if the other party is only interested in a discussion they expect to win, not looking for education and no intentions to change their mind.

But I don’t feel the phrases should be thrown around that easily. Some people sounding awfully self rightious when declaring “It’s not my job to educate you.”

I’ve had to educate a few people, when the talk turned to my orientation. I’ve had a few who declared it couldn’t be right, they have never heard of such, relationships is a must and they all work this one certain way.

But ignorance isn’t always a purposely bad intention. After some talking, helping the other understand, you can either tell they have enough base to agree or at least admit to not understand but might look further into it. Or you’ll stand with someone who refuses to learn a new view on new things and what’s the point then to tell them go educate themselves?

Because you don’t know what sources they go to on their own. I’ve seen more than one case of people losing a partner, friend or other from them ‘educating themselves’ by the first and best souce about certain subjects. And you can easily find ignorant texts on everything on a google search as much as more educated articles and sites. And many latches onto the first source they find.

Yeah… to me “it’s not my job to educate you” and “educate yourself” often sounds too selfrightious to me in the cases I’ve seen it used, which won’t provide the base of the subject you might prefer the other party to have. Yes, I’ve had a few people I told to go educate themselves about certain things too. And I know it can be very different from situation to situation.

But think about it… awareness comes with information. If you know the answers, why not share instead of acting up about someone not knowing on their own?

But that’ just my random thought of the day, I just needed to share.

Thanks for your attention.

Nearly every time I see someone spout “It’s not my job to educate you” it’s from someone who can’t back up what they’re saying with factual sources.

Too bad there wasn’t some sort of indication that it was not appropriate for children. Like a big fat R where the rating is
