Their purpose is to let the speaker think and gather thoughts.

How often do you plan out an entire hypothetical scene in which you do everything flawlessly and epic and then when it comes time to actually do it, you chicken out?

How often do you get sad because the hypothetical scene ends horribly in your mind so you don’t even bother doing it in the first place?
