You’re right, they don’t have to be attracted to gender or anything, that’s why they’re labeled as asexual. When you form a emotional bond, you, someone or everyone else would have to know what the gender of the person is.
Asexual, aromantics dont form those bonds with people. That’s what the a in ace/aro means. A as in the root for not. And why is gender so important? People can form bonds with people without knowing the gender. And what would a person in a relationship with an agender person be considered? Huh?

Friendly reminder that gray-asexual and demisexual people are part of the asexual spectrum, and have a lot of feelings, experiences and struggles in common with completely asexual people, so it is perfectly rational for them to be part of the asexual community if they wish.
Bonus reminder: Asexual people who make shitty comments about gray-asexuals and demisexuals are hypocrites, and they really ought to know better than to exclude or invalidate someone else’s sexual identity.
