Studios EA Has Killed: A History -

Thought I’d share this since there are apparently people in my midst who think it’s ok to support a greedy company who’s deliberately destroyed hundreds of careers just because you think their shiny new FPS looks cool.

(Also, fun fact: forcing Bioware to make a game of a genre they have no experience with is the exact same thing they did to kill Command & Conquer.)

People, I don’t usually add to posts but HOLY SHIT is it important you recognize just how -evil- EA is.

If you aren’t able to read the article, EA killed single-handedly some of the greatest studios from the 90s all the way to the new tens.

And often how they killed a studio? Force them to make a game in a genre that they have no experience working with.

Origin Systems? Killed by the one-two punch of Ultima 8 (a platformer isometric hack ‘n’ slash) and Ultima IX (a buggy unfinished mess EA meddled with constantly).  Their usual games? Flight simulators and complex RPGs with extensive worldbuilding and mechanics.

Dreamworks Interactive? Forced to develop Call of Duty knockoffs in the rebooted Medal of Honor series. Their usual work? WWII shooters with a cinematic focus, James Bond games, stuff that felt like movies. Killed by Warfighter’s terrible launch.

Westwood? Invented the RTS as we know it with Dune II and Command & Conquer. Killed by EA forcing them to make the FPS Command & Conquer: Renegade. Their usual games? RTS.

Maxis: The Sims. SimCity. EA forced online-only and microtransactions into the last SimCity and the Sims 4, respectively. Both tanked (moreso SimCity) and rather than take the blame for their greed, EA closed Maxis.

Visceral Entertainment: The Dead Space guys. EA once more forced microtransactions and multiplayer into Dead Space 3, and removed much of the horror. EA then declared for Dead Space to survive it would have to sell 5 million copies–an absurd sales figure by almost anyone’s standards. They were forced to make a Battlefield game, Hardline, a cops and robbers reskin of 4 that didn’t really catch on or make waves, and thus were shut down–but not before half the team was forced to working on DLCs and a select few on a Star Wars game that was ultimately cancelled.

Bottom line, EA is AWFUL. Just…do not buy from them. Do not encourage them.

Between them and Activision, you have everything wrong with the gaming industry.

I read this as ‘EA killed’ and thought that they had put out a hit on someone

Tbh they might as well have

Thinking about lil nas x. Thinking about how literally less than a month ago, I was seeing thinkpieces about potato heads having gender and how my generation is soooo sensitive. Thinking about how often I’ve been told “don’t like it don’t look” bc “whhaaaat the sandwiches are good” or “they were just JOKING” or “people have a right to serve whomever they want, go find another cake shop if it bothers you, oh my god.”

Thinking about how many times I’ve heard the words “music used to be ABOUT something.” Thinking about all those gotcha jokes where the set up is “if that was my son, why i would” and the punchline is that they’d love him, right, because it’s funny we are at risk of being traumatized. Thinking about this quote I read today about disrespect - that there’s plenty of people who think respect means “accepting as the absolute authority”. Thinking about religious trauma and the “battle for the soul of the nation”.

Thinking about how fighting them off shouldn’t be his job. Thinking about how preformative this pearl clutching is; how it’s just asinine rhetoric to cover blatant bigotry. Thinking about how I am scared to hold her hand sometimes. Thinking about bravery. Thinking about how the first pride was a riot. Thinking - holy shit. He just saved so many lives, and i hope he knows it.

Fantasy story about a warrior who has been cursed by so many different supernatural creatures, wizards, etc that all if the curses counteract each other.

At this point he’s spent so long carrying a thousand curses that he’s actually learned how to manipulate the curses to uses for his benefit.

He used to be a raging asshole but after getting so many curses he’s mellowed and is more like a lightly ironic optimist who takes every possible opportunity to drag any magical creature relentlessly.

Alternatively play a warlock who has no patron, just a shit load of curses like this.

Also. No impulse control whatsoever.

They try to use only cursed objects as clothes, weapons, jewelry, etc. They have about forty grimdark prophecies of a terrible fate which go unfulfilled just hanging over them. Like the whole world wants this to be a tragic cursed figure destroyed by hubris but it tried too hard and now there’s just some random, genial person soaked to the gills in dire potential.

There needs to be at least one arc - probably in the earlier angry-asshole era - that involves him desperately trying to get cursed in a way that will clash with the doom that’s due in like three days.

I’d use this to develop a redemption arc by having someone he likes get caught up in a curse, and over the course of resolving it he realizes his hundreds of curses let him help other people and also he learns to be less of a douche for the sake of people he cares about.

So far the “this is like X” replies on this are not correct.

this is like that girl in the yugioh cards who refused to stop messing around with forbidden cursed artifacts
