so i saw some people discussing how loki in ragnarok shouldn’t have been at all phased or subverted by dr. strange – which i agree with, but also, hey, it’s comedic and you can argue that he was taken off-guard, but upon re-watch, something stuck out to me –
there’s this moment when they appear at the bottom of the stairs and thor rolls down the last couple and stands up and he says
we could’ve just walked.
and it made me think of how magic works in terry pratchett’s novels, how (to paraphrase) the hard part wasn’t turning someone into a frog, it was not turning someone into a frog when you knew how easy it was.
like, the whole scene with dr. strange is just. all magic. all pointless magic. unnecessary magic, when, well. they could have just walked.
whereas loki doesn’t really rely on magic overmuch in the movie – he uses it as a tool, when he needs it, but if the job can be done with plain old non-magical trickery or a knife, he just uses those. he resorts to magic when he’s cornered by valkyrie, he uses it when his goals are most directly accomplished by using magic rather than by other means.
whereas dr. strange is using magic all over his scene, just to use it. just because he can. magic was unnecessary for ninety percent of what he did in that scene, the only time he needed magic was to whisk them away to norway. but he teleported all over the place even when he only needed to move a few feet, gave thor an ever-refilling beer that just spilled everywhere, floated around to make a show of how ~magical~ he was, when…

i mean, i’m very sure that the filmmakers intended it for comedic effect, but there’s also a layer there of dr. strange being much less comfortable with magic than loki is – loki doesn’t need to bust out the magic at every opportunity, it’s simply a skill, a tool that is completely under his control and at his disposal. whereas dr. strange (at least in his scene in ragnarok) is showing off, which reeks of insecurity.
i guess i’m thinking… if you take the magic away, loki is still a deadly, formidable opponent with many tricks up his sleeve, but dr. strange is just a guy in a cape.
this is good and true because in the comics loki and dr strange got in a fight in a parking lot and then both of them had their magic taken away so loki just punched stephen through a wall and called it a gay ass day

No, the meme is everyone acting like they were somehow tricked into liking Homestuck/MSPA and that is was always bad and THEY couldn’t have liked it without some sort of shawl being pulled over their eyes like Andrew Hussie is some sort of stage magician who was advertising his webcomic as the next Jane Eyre or To Kill A Mockingbird. Somehow the internet seems to think the only way to feel burnt out by a series is to say it was terrible from the start and they either only liked it ironically (lol it was all garbage!) or that they only enjoyed it because they were unable to process how horrible it was back then. THE MEME IS NOT LETTING PEOPLE ENJOY A WEBCOMIC WHERE A LITTLE MAN HAS A BULL PENIS CANE AND A SUBURBAN KID HAS A BATHTUB LAUNCHED THROUGH HIS WALL BY A GOTH HUNDREDS OF MILES AWAY.
Just let the meme die. Let people unironically enjoy Homestuck again without needing to pull a 20 page defense essay out of their asses. If you’re tired of it that’s fine it was legitimately over a billion words long, that’s understandable. I just miss the times where the fandom was about piecing together the wildly intricate but 100% bullshit plots and laughing at poster-worthy one liners scrambled into paragraphs of text.
I really wanted to meme the classic ‘no fun allowed’ pic and say ‘nice bait’ but I legitimately can’t tell anymore if you guys are doing this to be assholes in general or because you think you’re knights on some goddamn crusade. So in the spirit of Homestuck, here’s words:
Homestuck isn’t a masterpiece, and that’s okay.
It’s fun. That’s all it needs to be. Fun. Maybe it’s not what you consider fun. Hell most people wouldn’t consider reading 1.3 billion words that read like a shotgun loaded with a thesaurus fun and that’s okay. It never needed to be fun for everyone. Some people like football. Some people like youtubers. Some people like cooking or fashion or crafts or board games or cars or historical documentaries and that’s okay. Not everything needs to be grim dark or challenge the status quo or become the focal point for a worldwide revolution. It’s okay for some things to just be weird and funny. And that’s what Homestuck is.
I don’t know if you’re someone who was scorned by the fandom or who decided they didn’t like it anymore, that’s fine. I did like it, got a little tired myself, and upon going back decided I still enjoyed the writing and the style. I’m not going to pretend it’s somehow the deepest work of literature ever made, but I won’t understate how different it is from everything else. That’s the main reason I loved it, and the reason I’m excited for it to start up again! Interwoven flashes, music, games, the sudden updates at 3am. All of that! Homestuck and MSPA aren’t perfect, but nothing else scratches that itch and also…I just enjoy it!
You know who else enjoys/enjoyed homestuck? The people who made like half the media you enjoy if you’re on this hell site. I’m not going to name names, some people want to leave their pasts behind and that’s understandable. Off the top of my head, I can think of 4 major VA’s who have entered the industry in the past few years who either started off acting in Homestuck fan projects, or found their way into the industry while working with the fandom. Cartoon and live action front runners loved it, hell it got shoutouts from multiple series that were running at the time! And honestly…that’s where I think it got its bad rap from.
Homestuck and Problem Sleuth attracted creators. Everything in it was different but also left room for change or reinterpretation and Hussie encouraged that! He let it thrive! Some series might have a nod to fans or an episode about fans, but he straight up made fan theories true and even in HS2 he fucking MADE THE FANFICTION ‘DETECTIVE PONY’ CANON. Is that an emotionally mature story decision? No, but it made me laugh so hard I almost fell out of a chair. All these creative people drew together into one place, and that resulted in fans that were more fans of the fanbase than the original content. And if that’s what you were then hey guess what…THAT’S OKAY. We all did cringy things when we were younger, and maybe that’s where a lot of you came from! Maybe you think we’re fans of the content made from the comic rather than content makers who just genuinely enjoyed it!
And holy shit if you’re gonna talk emotional maturity, you just tried to make a random person sad for enjoying something you don’t. That wasn’t the act of a noble protector of true media, that’s what a 3rd grade bully does because their parents inadvertently taught them that joy only came through the suffering of others. Yeah I make a living making fart jokes on the radio and shitposting for money but at least I fucking admit that and try to use my life to make others smile instead of anonymously tearing them down.

Point is, it’s okay to like things that aren’t cultural works of art. Right now the world fucking sucks and between fighting the good fight and trying to change everything around us, some of us wanna take a break from serious soul crushing nihilism and read a funny webcomic where a juggalo beats people to death with bowling pins and Ben Stiller’s shades are a major plot point.
