The more I learn about judaism the more I wonder where tf christianity got all its bad shit. Why is divorce a sin in christianity when judaism has recognized the right to divorce for nearly a millennia and has codified religious laws for it. Why does christianity consider sex to be dirty (to the point where puritans considered it a sin to enjoy having sex with your own spouse) when in judaism it’s considered holy and it’s a literal mitzvah to have sex with your spouse on the sabbath. Why does christianity consider it a sign that you’re faithless if you question your religion when in judaism that’s considered an essential part to developing your faith. I’m probably stating the obvious here but I still can’t get over the fact that there’s no historical basis to any of this shit before christianity started, it’s like christians just said “hey guys what if we took the torah and built a new religion around it but this time it was actively hostile to human life”
I have a little bit of insight on this from when my Christian college required a class on Christian history. Luckily my teacher was pretty radical and described it as a religion FOR the persecuted that has become a religion OF persecution. To summarize it:
- Jesus lived under the unjust government of Rome and used Jewish (and allegedly Greek) philosophy to inform his teachings about nonviolent spiritual protest through radical love
- Early Christianity spread through marginalized communities who honored martyrs that chose to die instead of submitting to Roman oppression
- Christianity grew and new unjust governments (monarchies and catholicism) manipulated the glorification of martyrs into a general glorification of suffering, allowing unchecked oppression by promising a paradise they never had to delivery
- The enlightenment encouraged a rise in individualism where anyone could read, interpret, and preach the bible in whatever manner they thought best
- Individuals are fallible, and they attached all manner of oppressive philosophies to Christianity, and now leaders who benefit from these philosophies fear loosing their privilege and dissuade their followers from questioning any aspect of their religion
- The best example of this is evangelical pastors who financially exploit their congregation, then justify their gratuitous wealth with prosperity theology (“I’m wealthy because God wants me to be. He wants me to have a new jet, if you donate to my cause I’ll put in a good word for you.”)
- Sex, being an important part of most human lives, is a common target for suppression (marriage/divorce laws this), such as how industrialized capitalist societies use arbitrary categorization of gender to control sex and those who want to do it
- Current Christianity (at least in the US) appeals to bigots by allowing them to express their hatred toward any group that is different while still feeling marginalized thanks to the religion’s history
- Ironically, the best examples of modern christ-like figures are anti-emprial, anti-colonialist, and anti-capitalist protest leaders who were assassinated for criticizing governments (Ghandi and MLK)
Religions are created by humans, and they change as humans do. Christianity didn’t begin with the beliefs that all pleasure is sin, sex is bad, and religion is above questioning. Jesus is notoriously associated with wine, hung out with sex workers, and questioned religious authorities who upheld Roman oppression. Personally, I think Jesus’ philosophy is extremely applicable to present times, but most people receive that information through two thousand years of corruption.
Love each other, love yourself, love the universe, tear down oppressive establishments.
This is all very interesting information, thank you for sharing! I definitely agree that Jesus’ actual teachings are relevant to today’s world, they’ve just unfortunately been warped a lot over the centuries
