i don’t know if this is common knowledge or not but anne frank’s diary was not some random document that sprang into existence by accident, she fully intended to publish it and she was actively revising it for publication at the time of her arrest, she desperately wanted to be an author when she grew up and she left behind a substantial amount of fiction (several short stories, a novel in progress) when she died. her diary was not a private stream of consciousness, like, she was writing to communicate with other people and to create a work of literature. there are unabridged editions available which are less polished and include passages that she and her father originally struck from the record, but the most widely available version, probably the one you read, was carefully edited and revised both by her and, after her death, her father.

THE CONTEST:

Come up with a scary story and/or image that showcases something that you’re afraid of. Creepypasta, comic, disturbing artwork, ghost story, true story, as long as it’s spooky and some form of writing/art, it qualifies!

On Halloween the entries will be judged by myself and a small group of people I’ve selected. The most bone chilling submissions win!
Guidelines-
-No NSFW please, implied sexual themes are okay at most but nothing graphic
-Artwork submitted needs to be finished. This doesn’t mean colored, just as long as it’s not an obvious work in progress and can clearly be seen.
-Writing must be at least 3 paragraphs long
-If you submit art, it needs one paragraph minimum explaining what’s going on.
-This should be a given but please use your own original stories, if I find out you used an already existing story you will be disqualified
-NOTE: Aside from being published on the blog, the spooky entries will remain yours. I’m not going to be using them for My Magic Grandpa but may draw inspiration from them if any really catch my interest, I will ask first though.
THE PRIZES:
1st Place - You get to choose a Fearmonger of your very own which will become officially canon to the My Magic Grandpa universe! You’ll get art of 4 different forms for the monger with a character sheet and inclusion in the Fearmonger Family Album, along with the Fearmonger species Biosheet only available to official fearmonger owners.
2nd & 3rd - You get a randomly chosen Fearmonger with 3 forms and a character sheet, and inclusion in the Family Album to make them canon to My Magic Grandpa, plus the biosheet.
Time’s up and it’s time to look at our spooky tales to see which ones are the most frightening! There were only 8 submissions this go around so I’ll be judging them here.
First I’ll review each one, and announce the winners after a read more cut.
This story gave me Little Match Girl vibes which is actually quite relevant to the MMG universe, so props for that. On the terms of scare factor, it’s always unsettling to imagine no one really caring when you die, and worse still when it’s so sudden and out of nowhere is probably more terrifying to me than clinging on for a while longer. Because we’re just snuffed out in that moment and there is nothing, no time to think, no time to even process ‘I’m about to die’.
As someone who has relied on the internet the past 10 years and has social anxiety, this speaks to me fore sure. I’m trying to take steps to get a job and it’s pretty terrifying because I have no idea how I’m going to act in social situations any more, especially because I have severe trust issues from PTSD and other nonsense.
I’m thinking back to Higurashi right now, yikes but also amazingly unsettling. I think the added act of trying to remove them with this tiny little tool makes it all the worse because they’re small and in large quantities so it gives a sort of futile feel to the whole thing.
This one is a more personal fear, it’s less of an immediate fear but a fear brought on by a bad experience in the past. Those little terms and phrases that trigger the memories and throw you back in the moment to make you feel vulnerable. The worst part about this fear is how helpless it makes a person feel.
Choking to death is probably one of the more humiliating and traumatizing ways to go. To die choking on your food, something that should be harmless and enjoyable, that just sucks. I’m sure most of us have choked on food at one point or another and got scared for just a moment that we might die that way.
Hoo man, that was something alright. The atmosphere is so creepy and without answers to what exactly it even is, what it means, and a sort of cliffhanger edge, this definitely gives the reader the fear of the unknown for sure. It’s almost poetic, honestly.
This is another one that fits well in the MMG universe, as wraiths are quite nasty creatures that will make appearances in the series. Anyway, to be stuck with something like this is a very real and terrible thing that some people have to go through daily. I already suffer enough from depression, I wouldn’t be able to stand having voices on top of invasive thoughts.
Spiders are a pretty common fear, and even though I love spiders even I get unsettled by them sometimes when they’re in the house and not just minding their own business. Giant spider people could be cool… or really bad.
