Hey unpopular opinion but while the “the curtains are just fucking blue” meme is funny and all, sometimes writers use symbolism and sometimes the curtains are not just fucking blue sometimes specification of colors means something because sometimes writers think about adding depth and nuance to their work and maybe you should at some point think that art can have meaning and not everything should be taken at literal face value

Hi, friendly neighborhood english major here. the important thing when looking for symbolism are patterns: repeated elements, binaries, anomalies. Are a whole lot of things blue? The curtains, the car, the main character’s bedroom walls, the pattern on the plates, the love interest’s eyes? That’s starting to become a repeated element. Binaries? Are all those things blue but put in opposition to the red fire and the red blood and the red rose etc? That’s a binary. Does the blue window with the blue curtain have a bright yellow tulip sitting on the sill? That’s an anomaly.

These are all interesting things to pay attention to in an author’s work. The next important thing to ask is why is the author calling my attention to these colors? What function does coloring these items serve?

Maybe the author just likes blue.  But if blue things keep turning up all over the place, there’s a chance that it’s not a coincidence, and the color is serving a purpose in the story.

I applaud this addition thank you

“I have a blue house with blue windows. Blue are the colours i thought that I would wear. Blue are the streets and all the trees are too. I have a girlfriend and she is so blue. Blue are the people here who walk around. Just like my corvette, its standing just outside. Blue are the words i speak and what i think. blue are the feelings that live inside me”

ok but the way Aziraphale and Crowley are the main characters despite contributing absolutely nothing to the plot except making everything worse once or twice and then not helping anyone ever will never not be funny

It’s time for artists to stop personifying Gluttony as a fat person and start personifying them as a billionaire capitalist who surrounds themselves with luxury at the expense of the poor.

I like this but also in the seven deadly sins there’s avarice (ie love of money) as well as greed/gluttony.

I’d replace it with people spending a fortune on ridiculous food trends

Compromise- Every sin is a billionaire!

Gluttony is the hedonist who spends billions on fancy foods and luxurious beds while people starve on the streets around them.

Greed is the tax-evader who stores all their wealth in a maze of offshore accounts and shell companies, who’d prefer to never be able to use it then to risk someone else taking a penny.

Lust is the predator who thinks only in terms of power, and is surrounded only by people they can bribe or bully.

Wrath is the conservative who insists the poor and needy are “stealing” from them, who looks at every soup kitchen and benefit payment as a personal insult against them.

Envy is the ladder-climber only cares about their own success, stabbing anyone that could their friend in the back for a fancier office and another 0 on their salary.

Sloth is the trust-fund kid, who has lived their whole life on their parents money and has never so much as cleaned a table without a servant stepping in.

Pride is the elitist who insists they worked hard for everything they own, they deserve everything, they’re only richer then the rest of us because they’re better then everyone else.

The best part is you can cut down on drawing time because they’re usually all the same person!

This is probably the most biblically accurate way to draw the seven deadly sins
