watching planet of the apes really fucks me up bc these are just people wearing ill fitting ape costumes except their babies are clearly chimpanzees anyway i’m having a crisis
i have so many problems with this
1) ape costume. still has like a weird mullet? what the fuck stop it
2) that’s supposedly her newborn son. as in fresh out of the womb. just ripped out of her ape-y vagina. except that…is clearly not an infant
3) i am. Angry
4) also like in the next scene there’s another (not advanced) chimpanzee and her baby? EXCEPT LIKE. THAT CLEARLY WAS A FUCKING BONOBO. i’m going to go all jane goodall on this shit
tldr escape from the planet of the apes SUCKS and like these aren’t even all of the reasons why
good things about this movie: brings up topics like animal experimentation and what constitutes as ethical within our society as contrasted by that of fictional albeit extremely intelligent apes
bad things: cornelius & zira are like. very morally grey characters—zira in particular was a scientist who would perform brain surgery & different kinds of “torture” on feral humans within her timeline. HOWEVER that’s like, the equivalent of humans experimenting on animals (in current times, and definitely in 1971 when the film first was released).
but like, zira is ALSO a feminist who (during her brief appeal with the world) tries to speak up on women’s rights as well as the rights of animals, and how Politics Suck. she’s outspoken and often is more prevelant in convos than her husband cornelius, which is obvs a foil to like, male dominated conversation & industry
which is good except bc she morally grey, the discourse surrounding her is like the fucking vriscourse!!!!!!
the fact that ashton kutcher basically dropped his career as an actor to create an organization to help stop sex trafficking and has saved over 6,000 victims and has identified over 2,000 abusers is so fucking badass
I’m pretty sure it was less dropping his career and more nobody in the industry would work with him after he wouldn’t stop talking about the pervasiveness sex trafficking at the core of Hollywood.
