Fanfiction, fanart and fan content in general is living proof that humans would work by producing content for a living if everyone was just given a living wage.
There’s a lie spoken by a lot of people that no one would do anything if you handed them money but myself and hundreds of thousands of people produce free content constantly, all the time, just because we can.
There’s nothing to be gained other than making myself and others happy with the content I provide. And you know what? Handing me a living wage wouldn’t stop me from producing these things. It would actually make it easier for me to produce them because I wouldn’t have to worry about money.
So call me a socialist and you’re right, but I’m fucking right. Artists, writers, and content creators, our work should be valued.
This is one of the many reasons why I think giving all humans a steady living wage regardless if they work or not should be mandatory. No one wants to sit on their ass and not do anything. And anyone who sits on their ass is generally doing something creative and should be valued for what they provide to society.
But this is really important. I’ve read fanfiction longer than War and Peace, seen art better than modernist crap, watched edited videos better than some movies. AND PEOPLE DO THIS ALL FOR FREE. I write fanfiction for no excuse other than I really like it and have produced enough written words to be an entire book. But is stuff like this valued? No, because we don’t sell it. Money should not be the reason people make or don’t make things. We should be able to pursue our passions regardless of financial status
