The Nazis were fascists that called themselves socialists in the beginning because that’s what was most appealing to Germany at the time.
They called themselves a “socialist” party long enough to get in power but they were ALWAYS showing their true colors.
The shift to true fascism was so gradual that those who already blindly followed them didn’t notice and those who didn’t follow them were either ignorant to the truth or their voices were drowned out. And by the time anyone realized what was happening it was too late.
Ya know. Kinda like what Republicans are literally doing right now in the USA. And everyone who already blindly follows them doesn’t notice.
I have no idea where this sudden surge of “ThE nAzIs WeRe SoCiAlIsT aCtUaLlY” is coming from but I’m fairly certain it’s a lie perpetrated by those who are against Socialism. AKA: the Right. Because the worst people in the world are Nazis and Racists. And the Right has a ton of those, but they don’t like calling themselves that. The Right also hates Socialism. And the world hates Nazis, and Nazis were racist. So by claiming that Nazis and by extension racists of the time were socialists it downcries socialism as a whole, while also giving the Right a way to go “No see we’re not Nazis and Racists! They were a bunch of SOCIALISTS!”

The full name of the Nazi party, Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (Nationalist Socialist German Workers’ Party), played exactly off of this. To right-wing voters, they would play up the Nationalist and German parts, and to left-wing voters who didn’t trust them, they pointed to the Socialist and Workers’ Party parts of their name. But the Nazis didn’t like socialists, to the point where they, like anyone else they considered “wrong” (such as Sinti and Roma people, Jewish people, homosexual people, and political enemies), were put into concentration and destruction camps by the Nazis. So, no, the Nazis were not socialist, and anyone who claims they were is an idiot who would have and is falling for propaganda.
