am i petty? am i going to celebrate the disney/pixar 6-year streak finally ending? losing to a movie i haven’t even seen? and feeling vindication on the behalf of all the animation studios who were ignored and scorned in the past? oh absolutely
@ everyone in the notes are asking about “what happened”
this article haunts me every single awards season. this article. god. it just sums up how oscar voters are just clueless when it comes to animation:
a voter called princess kaguya and song of sea “two obscure freakin’ Chinese fuckin’ things that nobody ever freakin’ saw”. like, 1.) racist! 2.) those movies are japanese and irish, respectively, and 3.) you’re an official oscar voter and you’re complaining about the movies being OBSCURE? HUH? it’s absolutely baffling that this person can vote for the oscars! they’re so utterly disrespectful to movies!
2 of the voters in the article voted for the disney movie just because their kids liked it, so, that tells you what they think of animation pretty quick. this was the year that big hero 6 won over httyd2, kaguya, and song of the sea (the lego movie wasn’t even nominated).
it’s just an ongoing, tiring problem that just pervades the U.S. as a whole, unfortunately. disney/pixar makes great movies, but they’ve been winning for 6 years straight, and it’s absolutely connected to the fact that many of the voters don’t care about animation.
so spiderverse winning this year’s best animated feature is a great step forward in recognizing the value of animation! and i hope there’s more thought put into voting as the years go on; but, again, the lack of respect that animation has is a cultural issue.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again but it is absolutely an example of civilizational inadequacy that only deaf people know ASL
“oh we shouldn’t teach children this language, it will only come in handy if they [checks notes] ever have to talk in a situation where it’s noisy or they need to be quiet”
My mom learned it because she figured she’ll go deaf when she gets old
My family went holiday SCUBA diving once, and a couple of Deaf guys were in the group. I was really little and I spent most of the briefing overcome with the realization that while the rest of us were going to have regulators in our mouths and be underwater fairly soon, they were going to be able to do all the same stuff and keep talking.
The only reason some form of sign language is not a standard skill is ableism, as far as I can tell.
For anyone interested in learning, Bill Vicars has full lessons of ASL on youtube that were used in my college level classes.
