rose notices it first. she tries to reach for a set of outcomes and is met with a hollow bleakness. it hurts to concentrate and she stutters when kanaya asks her what the best strategy is for remodeling the kitchen. she wants to answer but can’t
it takes a lot more effort for john to fly, suddenly. he feels more connected, to earth, to people. he can’t entirely complain but it’s frightening
jade attempts to warp to space and glitches out momentarily. her friends witness and are panicked, asking if she’s alright. her eyes are wide and her hands are shaking and she can’t seem to say what she saw
dave finds out when he almost trips over a doomed dave’s body in the hallway one morning. they start arriving, constantly for a few days straight. he twitches more often, the clang of metal worse than before on his senses. he swears to never time travel again and the bodies stop piling up
jake feels empty more often than not (is it depression or was he just like this before? he can’t be sure about anything anymore). roxy tries to slip into the void and returns coveted with bites and scratches and tears streaming down her cheeks. dirk attempts to break contact with himself, to split again, and hears thousands of versions of himself scream simultaneously before he’s knocked out.
jane is in the midst of a revival when it happens. a newly hatched mothergrub was having some difficulty in the caverns, and she was sent to remedy the situation and boost her to better help. when she tried to bless the newborn with vitality, her vision became foggy and the creature went still in her arms and never moved again
then they turn 30.
karkat notices the gray in his hair, and then the white in dave’s. wrinkles form. worry lines deepen. rose realizes that her voice is starting to crack and starts HRT years after the green sun made her how she wanted. roxy finds a lump in her breast and doctors confirm the worst. chemo isn’t effective. godtier revival doesn’t work anymore.
they bury her in the spring after her thirty second birthday.

jake starts forgetting things. he’s 50 and thinks he’s back in the game. he tries to jump off of a cliff thinking he’ll fly and snaps his neck, dying instantly. they find his body a few weeks later.
karkat and dave are the only interspecies coupling to age together. their twin daughters have families and they meet the first batch of grandchildren before they finally pass in their sleep together. there’s a doomed dave outside of their bedroom door.
jane and dirk commit suicide within weeks of each other. pills and decapitation. “of course it was decapitation” says rose, chain smoking. the circles under her eyes are getting worse, and she’s back in AA. being an ex-god doesn’t free you from relapse, after all. “he just had to fucking cut off his head.”
kanaya still looks not a day older than twenty five when rose dies. she can’t cry for the first few months afterwards, until one day vriska stops by. she makes a joke and then sobs for hours on and off. it lasts like that for a few years, and then she hardens.
nobody knows what happened to john.

six hundred years pass before kanaya is impaled by a younger jadeblood. years before she introduced combat to the caverns. “we have nothing better to do” she said after the last mothergrub died. “what would you suggest, playing nice?”
then two hundred years. terezi is walking one day when everything feels far too numb. she tries to call for help and collapses in a puddle of her own urine. “sometimes older trolls have strokes,” says the er doctor. “it’s not very common but it happens.”
vriska holds her hand. after a week they take her off of life support. the university where she worked holds a riotous memorial service. the mention of civil war has been running around for decades. vriska didn’t expect to live to see it begin, let alone run its course.

If we’re all being honest with ourselves, a public school having an outdated educational video featuring a celebrity with dubious legal standing is the most accurate thing in any of the Marvel movies.
