Today Sony Animation’s The Emoji Movie opens in theaters. Now after seeing the trailers and the hideous Rotten Tomatoes score some people might be tempted to go see it “Just to see how bad it is”. Well to that I say, don’t.
The main reason being if you go to see it in theaters, even if it’s for that reason, you’ll be supporting the film, you’ll be giving the film money. When you give a film money that’s basically telling the film company that you’re willing to pay to see that movie, to a movie company that basically says “Yes, I want more of this please” and they’ll end up making a sequel and making more films similar to The Emoji Movie, which is obviously not what people want.
So unless you’re a film critic and it’s your job to see this film, or you actually legitimately think it looks good and want to see it (because I guess there’s at least one person out there like that (I won’t judge)), then don’t go see it.
To sum this up, I’ll leave you with the words of critic Jay Sherman.
if you really wanna see it, just don’t give it money
You want the goth subculture to continue existing? Then accept that not everyone can be an 80s goth and a 90s goth. Those times are past. There will be 2000s goths and 2010s goths and hopefully goths for many, many years to come. And there will always be differences and the scubculture is going to evolve. Stop shitting on current goths just because you you can’t change and are suffocating in your stagnation and elitism.

I didn’t realize that people were so conscious and like analytical of something like goth culture and I feel like I’ve entered the twilight zone reading everything
It was always like this, which is one of the reasons I was always afraid to label myself as such when I was a kid in the 90s and early 2000s, because I had it beat into my head that I wasn’t good enough for it because I didn’t love Bauhaus and Evanescence and Nightwish didn’t count. I didn’t want people that I respected in the subculture to be mad at me, so I just complimented them on their outfits and worshipped them from afar rather than embarrassing myself and disrespecting the subculture. It wasn’t until I started seeing posts like this that I realized it was in me all along and I hadn’t allowed myself to acknowledge it because I didn’t feel “goth enough” or like I’d paid my dues. And this wasn’t till after college. It makes me kind of sad that I’ve spent so much of my life caring what elitists think. No one fucking elected you the authority. Stop getting high on your own farts and let people be happy. Take your disapproval and shove it up your ass for all I care. I don’t know why I have you so much credit in the first place if you treat newbies, or anyone for that matter, in that way.
Let’s not forget, being POC goth and not feeling accepted because we aren’t pale or fit the traditional idea of a goth. We’re already being made fun of by others for ‘wanting to be white’. Last thing we need is for the culture to reject us.
