West Virginia teachers just shut down the ENTIRE STATES SCHOOLS.
They went on strike.
They worked with churches, community centers, and food banks to make sure that students who rely on school to be a safe place or for a meal will still be able to get them.
They are one of the lowest funded states for education. Many teachers working retail and food service on the weekends.
They can’t properly make lesson plans when they can’t feed their own children.
They can’t teach all day to kids after working all night to pay bills.
They can’t watch their students education suffer because they are not being paid enough to live.
They are demanding better funding to schools.
They are demanding pay raises.
They are demanding better health benefits.
They are demanding the safety of their students.
Students in multiple counties led a support system for their teachers. Wearing purple to support them and hyping up social media.
More information. WV teachers are the 48th-lowest paid in the country and are looking at only 1-2% raises over the next few years. (Vox)
My mom was a teacher and still works in the public schools. My dad volunteers at the same school. I support teachers, and I support teachers doing what they have to do to get the salaries and benefits they need and deserve.

And because every intelligent person in the world has firmly taken the stance of “If I want to be able to look myself in the mirror tomorrow, I will do the opposite of everything Donald Trump does”, Everyone started donating to Shark Charities in an amazing example of collective beneficial pettiness. I’m thinking there’s a marine biologist out there right now somewhere like “Listen if we can just get him to say he hates Sharks on live TV we could repopulate the entire fucking ocean by 2019.”

Good God , it seems like no one can congratulate these poor kids on being brave without giving the credit to fucking Harry Potter or Les Mis.
like, ya know, these kids not only read these books and watched these films, but they also watched real-live black people do walk outs-sit ins and create entire movements all while receiving death threats from Police and regular citizens, they watched out leaders get assassinated. they watched black judges bodies being found”,They saw protester after protester go “missing” or “found shot” in their homes/cars. they saw week after week white murders walk free and black people rise up.
