the homestuck anti-sugar conspiracy

hellobeau:

@frantastically and i were talking about a couple of things in homestuck and started to realize this ongoing theme against sugar and sugar products, going through out the entire series:

- from the very beginning of the series John is immediately opposed to sweets like birthday cake even on his birthday because of his dad’s fanatic obsession with baking, to a point of filling the kitchen with more cakes and cookies and running back out of the house to go get more boxes of Betty Crocker boxed pastries.

- between scenes from WV and the trolls, we are introduced to the two Important Homestuck Sodas, Faygo and TaB. Faygo being the juggalo drink of choice is mostly looked over at first in favor of the more direct correlation of Sopor = Weed. TaB however is the drink of choice for WV and the Fuschia bloods, and while being described as notably sweet, TaB is famous for being one of the first diet sodas, and having no sugar in it.

- It’s even mentioned in Meenah’s story that the HIC produced TaB to compete with the subjugglator’s production of Faygo, and dispersed it to lower blooded trolls without actually telling them that the drink contained no actual sugar that Faygo would have. This is something that Meenah takes great pride in.

- Going Back To Faygo, it is later implied with Terezi’s duality to Rose’s storyline that Faygo and sugary soda is the troll equivalent to alcohol, as Karkat shows equal concern for Terezi’s soda problem as Dave does for Rose’s alcohol problem, and later Rose offers to form an AA like group with Terezi to address both of their substance abuse problems

- Sugar is brought up again with themes of substance abuse with the Tricksters. Calliope sees the lollipop juju and resulting sugar rush as a way to just have fun and not think about your problems, and introduces it to her friends when they’re going through their worst drama. The alphas however, after a night of no impulse control and general debauchery, respond to being Tricksters and the juju with a hangover and vowing to never go through the experience again.

if Anyone can draw some sort of conclusion with this information I’d love to hear it? why is hussie so anti-sugar??

OK SO !!!!! max @kanayamaryamistrans presented some good thoughts on this, and im going to break it down between what sugar means by kind of the human side of it, and the troll side of it.

With humans, in the earliest instances, sugar and the baked goods are sort of representative of John trying to grow up. He’s a thirteen year old boy who thinks his dad is a weirdo who’s obsessed with harlequins and cakes. While he doesn’t actually say anything to his dad about how he feels about the Harlequins, he does fight against the cakes because A Boy Can Only Stomach So Much Sweets. This is probably one of John’s first active acts of defiance and independence as he becomes a Teenager. So basically John breaking away from sugar as an act of rebellion is an easily read sign of John not being a young kid anymore.

With the trolls, sugar is brought up as a metaphor for substance abuse, first generally mentioned with Gamzee and his drug problems, and later more clearly with Terezi’s Faygo problems which are paralleling Rose’s immediately recognizable alcoholism. The problems mentioned by the two of them and others around them are directly connected and meant to be seen as The Same Issue.

This culminates with The Tricksters, who combine the two ideas of what sugar means in Homestuck.

The lollipop juju itself is 100% meant to be seen as a form of drug, loosening inhibitions and generally making people more likely to say and do things that they would not do regularly while having an immense comedown later and regretting all of it. This is the troll half of the equation.

The human side of the equation comes with how the tricksters actually Act. They’re loud, immature, overly invested in relationships, and uncomfortably sexual in a way that attempts to be performative of What Adults Would Want. They are classic teenagers.

So yes, literally, the end result of the Anti-Sugar Conspiracy, is a very drawn out way of explaining that Tricksters = Teenagers on Drugs

that was anti-climactic wasnt it

maybe hussies just diabetic?

avatar was like the highest grossing movie of all time and yet its only impact on culture was to confuse people talking about the last airbender

I watched Avatar late - like, really late, more than a year after it stopped showing in theatres - and remember thinking, wow that’s gorgeous… and that was all. And then realized that, money aside, the movie was a total flop. It was the most expensive animated black-light poster ever made, and designed to have absolutely nothing get in the way of the breathtaking graphics.

Nothing. Not even bad plot and dialogue. They weren’t good (there were a lot of cliches), but they weren’t cringe-inducing bad, either.

And I thought, “Cameron’s really done something incredible here - he’s got a movie with aliens with their own language, body-swapping, telepathic animal control, group mind-merging, soul-bonding, FLYING WILD DRAGONS, gorgeous and dangerous flora & fauna, evil space patrol, and levitating rocks. And fandom DOES. NOT. CARE.”

I had seen no pictures other than one or two screencaps of the aliens with grumbling about “yet another ‘what these people need is a honky!’ plotline.” Had heard no quotes from the movie. There’s no notable amount of fic. No usericons on LJ (which was big at the time). No meta, other than acknowledgement that this was another “white dudes rule” movie. Nada.

He managed to extract millions of dollars from the American public without making the smallest dent on their psyches, and that is an impressive talent. Biggest shared experience of modern America - more people saw it than the Avengers - and nobody remembers more than fragments of it, and nobody cares about that.

Paul Ryan has TURNED OFF HIS PHONE AND FAX so as to no longer hear the overwhelming protests of repealing the ACA, Obamacare.
So here is a new tactic:
Since Paul Ryan has blocked his office phones and fax numbers, and is turning away people who show up to deliver petitions, time to change tactics.
Please mail postcards to his HOME address saying NO to defunding Planned Parenthood, NO to repealing the ACA, and NO to privatizing Medicare!
