I’m actually super glad we’re having a conversation about this. The masculinization of black and brown women, because for years I felt like I endured this unique form of trauma until I realized other people went through the same thing too. And if there’s one thing that I’d like to add to the conversation, there seems to be this misconception that this is something that starts at puberty. Like boys tell you you look like a man to hurt your feeling when that’s so far from the case.
The first time I was purposefully misgendered was in kindergarten. I was constantly referred to by the masculine variant of my name, I was chased out of the women’s restroom, and I had grown adults questioning what my biological sex was before I even knew what the difference was. And those behaviors persisted into adulthood because now if I present as anything less than 100% feminine, people will either compare me to men or animals.
And for myself and for many other brown and black women this is a life long act deliberately intended to humiliate, shame, and other us for the features we were naturally born with and I’m glad we’re having a discussion on how harmful it actually is.]
A series of illustrations with short stories to retell the events of Yoshi’s Island through the perspective of Melon, the green yoshi who found Mario. As a refresher: Melon and the canon Yoshi we know are not the same characters; instead the Yoshi Mario befriends later will show up when he’s an adult! ^.^
As for the story itself, it follows Melon entirely, and while it’s gonna be following the events of the original game relatively straight, there’s gonna be a few twists and changes to make it fit the lore of my AU. If you follow my blog you’ll probably already know what those changes and twists are, but if not… gotta wait and see! owo
I intend on telling the story in at least 10 parts, and these are the first 5 parts. The map there is both what Melon is drawing in that second image, and a good indication of how the story will go!
I know it’s mainly because Mario is the main character and therefore needs a “trusty steed” of sorts, I.E Yoshi, but there are times where I wished Luigi and Peach had their own buddies, so that’s exactly what I did here! Birdetta is Peach’s companion, Peppers is Luigi’s, and of course Yoshi is Mario’s. uwu
Yoshi follows Mario around and joins him on his adventures, thereby making him a Spec-Op of the Mushroom Kingdom as well. Long story short he’s essentially Mario’s partner; he watches his friend’s back just as Mario does his!
Birdetta met Peach when they were both youngsters, with Birdetta’s mother having worked in the castle kitchens. The two became good buds and would play all around the castle, something Peach remembers very fondly because at the time she didn’t really have many friends. In fact, Peach would probably say Birdetta was the first legitimate friend she’s ever made, Daisy the second. Today, Birdetta aids Peach as a royal messenger, where it’s her job to run throughout the kingdom to deliver important documents between jarls. She’s exceptionally good at her job due to her speed, and sometimes have been tasked with getting messages to neighboring kingdoms.
She and Yoshi are mates. :)
Peppers met the brothers through Yoshi, since she was in a neighboring tribe and often came to Yoshi’s tribe to play. She accompanied the boys when they all made the decision to travel to Mushroom Kingdom, and when Luigi first opened his bakery Peppers was adamant about working in it, so it was pretty much a natural progression since they were already roommates. :)
While we’re on the topic, please have some headcanon regarding Companions and how they work:
Companions are animals with human-level intelligence. This generally means that while they don’t necessarily have their own kingdoms, they usually reside in simplistic societies with clear structure and culture, and as such they are considered sapient. Companions typically aren’t able to speak (or if they do, it’s extremely limited due to their vocal range) but can very clearly communicate regardless through other means, whether it be through universal form of Sign Language or some other way.
They got the name “companion” since in general terms they are friendly and are sometimes known to have families to host them when they travel into much larger, much more modern cities and towns. As such there were laws put in place to make sure the hosting families did not treat these beings as pets or even live-in servants, something I can imagine being an issue before the World Convention was formed. As time went on, the Convention had begun a program where companion races can petition to be recognized as a Kingdom and join their ranks. The requirements of such include having one or more Sponsor kingdoms, their own land/island, and clearly having an established body of government of some form (that is in some ways democratic in nature).
The very first “companion race” to have done this are the Kongs and the Kremlings, in which they were officially named a kingdom under the name D.K Isle.
Other companion races include Birdos, Yoshis, Rexes, and Nintendogs.
Now, Pets are animals who do not hold human-level intelligence and are, typically, domesticated from their much more feral counterparts for a variety of purposes. Sometimes its for companionship, sometimes for livestock, beasts of burden, whatever it may be. These animals include Spinies, Buzzy Beetles, Reznors, Poochies, Dhino-Rhinos, so on.

For those of you who don’t know, I designed some Pokemon Characters earlier in the year to explore a potential story idea, though I wasn’t sure how I’d tell it. This ask gives me a good idea of how I would though! Somewhat thinking it’s moreso on questions than it is me doing a full blown comic, but hey, that might change. O:
But ye! As a quick intro: Torch is a female elder Charizard; she’s wild and took it upon herself to try and bring a ragtag bunch of lost kids home. Wolf, the little Wooloo, is one such kid. She’s the rough and tough one of the kids, thinks she can take on anything that crosses paths with her. Thankfully Torch is around to keep her out of trouble uwu

Introducing the hopeful band in the Super Mario AU, the ROCKETTES!
Bowsette, despite being the crown princess of the Koopa Kingdom, wants anything but the responsibility of running the kingdom. Bowser did offer sharing power equally with her when she was old enough, but she flat-out refused; unless he absolutely needs her, she doesn’t want the pressures of being a prominent political figure.
Instead, she has an entirely different goal in mind: to be a rockstar. She gathered up her friends, packed up everything they can carry in their tour bus (more accurately, the raggedy multipurpose van Chompette got for her birthday) and off they went on their wild adventure!
Bowser, for the record, supports his sister and her dreams, but he can’t help but worry about her. Especially because she’s out there on her own; for the longest time it was just him, her, and Kamek.
Bowsette loves her brother and very much appreciates his support, but whenever he offers her any money she staunchly refuses; she’d rather make it through her band’s merit, not from the money she’s inherited as princess. There are times her friends have to convince her to just take the damned money though. ;w;
AT ANY RATE!
You have Bowsette as your bassist and lead singer, Goombette as the drummer (and occasional costume designer), Chompette as the guitarist and backup vocals, and Vivian that doubles as band manager and, many cases, the Special Effects… specialist. Currently they’re mostly hopping from gig to gig, hoping to spread their music around enough to strike it big. They probably aren’t terribly interested in signing with a label, but they aren’t quite well known in the indie scene yet either. They’re getting there though!
Fun facts!
-Chompette is selectively mute. She rarely ever speaks outside of music but when she’s on stage, she’ll sing her heart out. I imagine her singing voice is like Halsey, somethin’ to contrast Bowsette’s much rougher, heavier voice.
-Chompette is a Mushling (the same human race as Peach and Daisy)! It’s very common for Mushlings to have sharp canines, but Chompette is a rarity with her mouth full of shark-like teeth. It’s likely a harmless birth defect, but boy does it give her one wicked smile.
-Bowsette and Chompette have been friends since childhood, the rest they met a few years later and they’ve been the squad ever since.
-Every member has a function outside of just creating the music. Bowsette is essentially the “leader”, Chompette mixes and cleans up the music, Goombette designs any costumes they may need as well as handles the artwork, and Vivian is essentially everything else: the manager, the special effects artist, the accountant. Any role that needs to be filled will probably be filled by the ever skilled Vivian.
-Vivian is a Shadow Siren, a race of ghost-like beings who are native to Sarasaland. Shadow Sirens are not undead despite their appearance though.

Every month like clockwork, there’s some fatphobic trend on here that’s some iteration of skinny people being like, “ooh, thank god I’m not as fat as my brain tells me that I am.” And then when they got called out for being fatphobic, they say, “Well it’s not my fault, I just have body dysmorphia.” I genuinely don’t think that y'all know the difference between having poor self image and having body dysmorphia. Body dysmorphia is a very pervasive kind of obsessive compulsion. Its not you feeling bad about your body sometimes or being afraid to get fat. The intrusive thoughts and the fixation on the imperfections takes up your whole life. And it’s interesting how y'all only bring that up when it comes to the topic of weight. What about the other symptoms? What about skin picking? What about obsessing over body odor? What about looking in the mirror all the time? What about the way your hair looks? What about those?“
