i thought this year was 2016 but i just saw someone say that wanting to beat up KKK members makes you just as bad as the KKK
???
remember that time a few years ago when a post went around saying that we shouldn’t shame homophobes because phobias are irrational uncontrollable fears and it wasn’t their fault they were scared of gays
Why is it in Space Jam the Looney Tunes live under a golf course?
That confused me even as a kid.
it’s under the world in general. They just chose the golf course because it runs by roger rabbit rules where they can only do things when it’s funny and because that’s where michael jordan was.
Here you have a collection of cartoons I have watched that include some form of Magical Girl transformation. On the left you have transformations that include the heroes having their normal clothes removed, revealing their naked but featureless bodies, before their costumes appear, and usually one piece at a time. And on the right you have the transformations that have the costume immediately replacing the civilian clothes. Notice that the column on the right seems to be lacking (though it could probably have a few more I don’t know about because I haven’t watched those shows).
My point is, when I first saw the Miraculous Ladybug transformation I found it weird that she didn’t have her civilian clothes stripped from her before the costume took their place, which is what I’m used to with other transformation sequences.
I find it weird that they didn’t strip down a young girl (which is what all of these examples are by the way) for her transformation sequence. What does that say about the shows I used to watch?
So I want to add something to this.
While I can’t speak for Winx or W.I.T.C.H, since those shows are European based and probably got their ideas from their Japanese counter parts. I can (kinda) speak for Shugo Chara, Sailor Moon and Tokyo Mew Mew. Mainly because I’ve done a little bit of research on the whole “OMG WHY are they naked for their transformation scene?!” (which I got so often from friends back in school when I showed them a new anime)
In the Japanese culture to be naked isn’t a shameful thing. It is often looked upon as a purity thing. Because the body is pure and there is no reason to be ashamed of it, (Which in Western society is what we are taught) So there is that to consider, when watching a transformation scene. But if you think about it, these characters, Sailor Moon, Shugo Chara, Toyko Mew Mew, are literally transforming into someone else. They are no longer, Usagi, or Amu or whatever the TMM girls name is. But they are the hero. They are Sailor Moon, who eventually turns into Princess Serenity. So stripping away the clothes is a sign of them becoming the next person. If we continue with this train of thought, we can say that Marienette from Miraculous Ladybug isn’t really transforming into Ladybug, but that Ladybug is a type of representation of who she could be, (which Shugo Chara kinda does as well but in a different sense). Marienette becomes, strong, faster, and more graceful in the suit, but she also allows her own confidence to shine through as Ladybug. That’s not the character, or Tikki doing that. That is Marienette doing that herself. So you could hypothesizes that because the suit covers her clothes, the suit isn’t changing who she is but instead is helping her become a more confident Marienette. Sorry this got a lot longer than I had anticipated and I have more thoughts on this but I’ll leave it at that.
Seconding the whole “nudity isn’t sexual or shameful in certain contexts” thing. In the Sailor Moon manga, showing a character nude is usually meant to emphasize their purity/spirituality/etc. This happens a lot with Usagi.
As you can see, there’s nothing sexual in any of these panels. The nudity either represents the purity of the characters (as seen in the panels of Angel Usagi and Hotaru and Chibiusa) or is for artistic purposes. In fact, I don’t think nudity is ever used for sexual purposes in the entire Sailor Moon series. It’s always for artistic purposes.
I’ve also never gotten a sexual vibe from the transformation sequences in the anime (or from any magical girl series, for that matter). It’s all the same concept of artful nudity.
You will know when the transformation sequences are trying to be fanservice-y vs pure, and the fore is usually not going to be in the mahou shoujo genre.
Think of it the same as you think of the nudity in classical art vs a photo shoot for a big name magazine.
People like OP annoy the shit out of me because they don’t understand cultural context and extrapolate unrelated meaning using a westernized perspective on an East Asian/non-western concepts.
Also, the last bit is extremely smug and just annoying. Just say it. Don’t sit there and try to be cute. It’s annoying.
I am Silver Tongue, I am an artist. I have many characters and you can check out my art in the art tag. I occasionally practice witchcraft though I don't do anything too complicated. I am girl 2 and don't know what else to put here.
