did anyone ever actually read animorphs or did we all just glance at the covers and assume it needed no explanation on the way to the goosebumps section in our elementary school library
animorphs is a scifi series about the grey morality of war and child soldiers experiencing trauma, depression, PTSD, being frequently and brutally dismembered, disemboweled, literally tortured to the brink of death, forced to murder their own family members with their bare hands, and on page 22 of the very first book they watch the alien prince who gave them their ~wacky animal morphing powers~ scream while be eaten alive in vivid and gory detail
One dude permanently turned into a bird for a while, forgot how to make facial expressions when he was a human and ate roadkill. And that was one of the tamer things.
You know the starfish cover everyone likes to mock especially? The girl beat someone to death with her own severed arm in that one :)
What the fuck did I miss out on
the comic relief character finds out that his dead mom is alive, but as a helpless slave of the head overseer for the invasion of earth. he can’t make any contact with her— let alone free her— without dooming himself and his friends to execution or enslavement. he also can’t tell his father, who’s been grief-stricken to the point of child neglect for several years. this happens pretty early on.
The series ends with the brutal and bloody deaths of MULTIPLE MAJOR characters, before destroying all relationships they made. The survivors later go onto pull a Star Trek, “Thrusters to full, target that ship!” ending where it’s heavily implied EVERYBODY DIES!
And that’s not counting the alternate universes. Where the bird boy gets controlled by an alien, before he’s brutally beheaded. Several characters are vaporized, and death is everywhere.
Or how somebody gets his blown off in the American Revolution! The entire series is insane!
There’s a race of super advanced robots who would conquer the universe if they weren’t programmed to be pacifists. When one manages to bypass the pacifism protocal, he annihilates and entire underground enemy base with the flick of his hand. This gives the robot PTSD and he demands that the protagonists remove the chip that allows him to bypass the pacifism.
The whole “married with kids” ending wouldn’t even be so bad if there was actual romantic development with the endgame couples. But coupling some popular ships, usually where only the woman expressed her love, and letting the fans make this cobweb of every moment that can pass as romantic is unfair. It’s not our job to pinpoint when they might’ve started falling in love. Show some flirting, a proposal, a kiss or something.
Learn from Fullmetal Alchemist!!! It’s the perfect example of shonen manga nailing the “married with kids” ending!

So will this be sanctuary in the skeleton war?
Ok but like can you imagine that though?
It’s a meeting for the Skeleton War, which has been going on for decades. The Head Commander looks over the crowd of gnashing teeth and hollow eyes, more than she has ever seen before. Plenty of new recruits can be seen, still bone white and in some cases even still stained with blood, reminiscent of who they once were. What they once were.
The older ones are less shiny and brand new, some have gouges or cracks in their now dingy grey bones, some even worse off, with entire limbs missing. A few carry comrades’ heads on their back or chest, still talking and laughing with the others, still wanting to be a part of the fight. Not wanting to let go. She scans the crowd below, then traces up the walls and ceiling, eyeing the Elders. She wonders why they chose her to lead in this massive overthrow of the Meaties, but only for a split second as she knows to trust their judgement, as some have resided here for centuries. They are all mostly silent, with some hushed conversations and nodding here and there. No doubt scanning the crowd as she had, probably searching for new battalion leaders to serve under her command.
For a brief moment as she watches the Elders, she thinks about who or what they might have been, and if they had deserved to be mounted like prey. they certainly aren’t prey now. Her mind wanders to think about who she might’ve been before this. Nobody can remember who they once were in this room. For a second, that makes her sad. She shakes the thought out of her head as she rises from her Commander’s Chair at the head of congregation, built from the remains of the coffin she herself broke out of. A hush falls over the crowd as they wait to hang on her every word, eager to begin tonight’s rumpus.
With thousands of hollows aimed at her one sentence emerges from her clicking teeth, met with a chorus of haunting, excited bellows.
