Why do I get the feeling that anime Gym Leaders actually do have puzzles traps and disciples in their games just like in the games, but disassemble all of it when they hear Ash is coming out of pity?
Blain didn’t disassemble his traps when ash came and misty had to solve his riddle.
And to be fair, Ash never gets to quite a few of the gyms, he finds the leaders outside or someother bizarre circumstance happens (usually caused by team rocket)
Oh, he had to do shit to face Erica too.
And he’s never had troubles challenging a gym since, at least no trouble after getting there, not counting all the trouble he has with the actual battles. It makes me think that after Blaine there was some sort of Gym Leader meeting where they just agreed to let him challenge the leader directly upon reaching the gym, because they knew he wouldn’t be able to clear a gym on his own and didn’t want to deal with him longer than absolutely necessary.
Also I’m pretty sure Brock and misty were the ones to come up with the idea on the first place and after Blaine decided to see for himself, that’s when they agreed ash is too much of a moron.
