It’s dawning on me just how genuinely difficult it is to figure out if an FMA character is good or bad when they’re introduced.

And this is because literally 90% of them debut by trying to beat the shit out of Ed. Seriously. If you tally up every good/ally character at the end and divide them into “tried to beat up Ed in their introductory episode” and “did not try to beat up Ed”, I’m willing to bet the first category is larger.

A list of eventually “good” characters who were introduced by assaulting Edward Elric:

  • Roy Mustang
  • Winry Rockbell (manga introduction)
  • Scar
  • Izumi Curtis
  • Greed
  • Greed again
  • Slicer(s)
  • Tim Marcoh
  • Ling Yao
  • Lanfan
  • Fu
  • Mei Chang
  • Buccaneer
  • The Entire Briggs Mountain Army
  • Jerso
  • Zampano
  • Darius
  • Heinkel

Extra fun fact, the series Big Bad, Father, is introduced to Ed by healing Ed’s wounds. Ed and Al spend at least five minutes of that episode thinking “Maybe this dude isn’t so bad” which honestly I understand when you consider 2/3 of the people Ed meets typically try to kill him.

so then that means the test on whether someone is good or evil is determined by whether or not they kicked eds ass during their first encounter?

Completely normal (if you are a snail at least).

When still just a tiny larvae, a gastropod’s mantle (the part of the body under their shell/“back”, it’s where most of their guts and organs are) will twist around 180 degrees, making their innards into a knotted mess.

image

Some types of gastropods (such as nudibranches) have actually evolved “detorsion”. After their larvae go through torsion their guts will actually de-twist partially or completely, leaving the adults with an anus not so damn close to their heads.

this is the face of someone who doesnt shit on their own head

Okay but WHY do they do this????  What purpose does it serve?

One hypothesis  is that it helps position their gills/ sense organs to be facing forward instead of behind them. (cause like any reasonable critter their gills are usually positioned around their anus).

No one really knows at this point though. The benefits of twisting your guts and shitting on your head must be pretty good considering they have stuck with it for 500 million years, and behind only insects in terms of number of animal species.
