i’m so invested in toronto’s mystery tunnel story. after a month of fruitless investigating and a week-long public appeal from the police, two anonymous guys have admitted to building the whole thing for funsies. that’s it, no big deal. just guys being dudes. they just dug a 30-foot tunnel for personal reasons. case closed. amazing.
For what it’s worth, I can’t think of a single person in my friend group who if I said ‘hey you wanna dig a secret hideout tunnel with me’ would not immediately go for their shovel.
People have this weird belief that if you’re critical of a system or tradition, then it must be because you failed to live up to that system or tradition. The idea of having a principled stance, regardless of whether or not *you* personally benefit from society accepting that stance, is foreign to so many people. And this belief is really fucking important for and beneficial to the elites of this country. If you can get the masses to equate criticizing you and the institutions you control with abject personal failure, congratulations, you’ve just made yourself immune to accountability
Also, as a failure of the education system: we need to spend more time listening to the people our systems leave behind. “Well of course you’re critical of this; you failed” should not be a conversation-ender even if it is true.
i cannot BELIEVE that good omens has all that beautiful yearning and genuine emotion and made me cry but also has a scene of david tennant with a fake moustache dancing poorly in front of a shitty green screen
Zuko, deadpan: Yes. I am Lee, humble tea server, who has kidnapped Firelord Zuko and replaced him. You have seen through my facade. What gave it away? Was it the hair? I knew I didn’t have the crown on right.
Alternately:
Zuko, deadpan: Oh didn’t you know? The Jasmine Dragon was so successful that I was appointed Firelord.
a concept: zuko waiting tables at the jasmine dragon as a well-deserved break from firelord duties, but he does not understand how he keeps getting recognized!!! he’s wearing green and everything!!! it’s inexplicable!!!
I think a lot of people forget that Zuko was NEVER the villain. Like yes, he was an antagonist, and a foil to the gaang, but he was never a villain. Even back in season one, Zhao was the villain not Zuko. Then Azula and eventually Ozai in seasons two and three respectively. We are meant to root for Zuko from the beginning. He is always cast in a sympathetic light, even before we learn his backstory.
That’s why his redemption arch works. From the beginning he was framed against and outside the Fire Nation. In literally the third episode Zuko is pitted against Zhao and is shown to be more honorable, merciful, and different.
Zuko was never a villain, he was just misguided and an abused child who wanted his father’s love and acceptance.
