Mod talking here, this update here is important to me because I do honestly get bothered by the fact that a few people still don’t consider Diane an original character. Yes I know she started off as just one of the clones from the episode “Too Many Pinkie Pies” and technically that means I’m just taking a character from the show and expanding on her which from a first glance is not much different from how somebody expands on Twilight on a Twilight blog, but it is. Diane has grown a lot since that first post, I’ve worked very hard at making sure she has developed her own personality, and in my mind she has.
I have often commissioned people to draw Diane in the past, and usually the first comments from other people are just “Hey look! It’s nerdy Pinkie Pie!”, which honestly kind of hurts. There was even one occasion when somebody drew some fanart using Diane’s design thinking she was just Pinkie with a different outfit and hairstyle. On top of that on the rare occasion where I visit derpibooru Diane is just labeled as “Diane” putting her with the rest of the depictions of “Pinkamenia Diane Pie” as opposed to “OC: Diane”.
This was the main reason why the color change happened, though there is an in-universe explanation which will be revealed in an upcoming storyline. Diane might see herself as just another copy but that’s no reason for everybody else to think the same.
this isn’t a shitpost. in skyrim’s dragon language there are pairs of distinct words such as: ‘nid’ (no/none), ‘mid’ (loyal/loyalty), ‘mu’ (we) vs ‘nu’ (now), and ‘aan’ (an) vs ‘aam’ (to serve). this indicates that dragons are able to distinguish between the sounds ‘m’ and ‘n’.
the only difference between ‘m’ and ‘n’ is that the latter is formed with the tongue, while the former is produced with the lips
therefore, dragons have lips
This is some solid linguistic field work and I look forward to the followup post.
I am not sure what to do with this information, but I too await any follow-on research
i knew exactly what i wanted to do with this information
I’m gonna kill the joke by being pedantic (that is a very lovely dragon drawing, however, and blue is a nice shade for them). Many animals have lips, but they aren’t used for vocalization. In fact, most don’t. Even if Skyrim dragons had lips, they probably wouldn’t be very useful for language.
However, I would posit not that Bethesda designed their dragons incorrectly with respect to their made-up dragon language, but rather that the OP has a rather anthropocentric idea of sound production and has not considered birds.
Dragons don’t have lips for speech, they probably have a syrinx–the organ that (most) birds use to produce sound, and in the case of parrots, mynahs, and crows, imitate human speech.
So dragons are just giant angry parrots? WHERE’S MY GILBERT GOTFRIED DRAGON
I am Silver Tongue, I am an artist. I have many characters and you can check out my art in the art tag. I occasionally practice witchcraft though I don't do anything too complicated. I am girl 2 and don't know what else to put here.
