The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is not “these two rash teenagers with a mutual crush got caught up in a miscommunication and died” it is, “two families lost their future because they focused more on a grudge between them than on listening to/fostering the next generation.”
Loss of the future because you’re hung up on the past is the point and the tragedy.
The romance is not the point.
In fact, Romeo being fickle and falling in and out love lightning fast is highlighted in the first encounter with him. We’re purposefully shown that from the start. That this isn’t two soulmates meeting, it’s a rushed, hormonal, silly teenage crush with that forbidden thing making it even Bigger because that’s how teenagers are. Teenage crushes are suppose to get their chance to play out (and it COULD play out, is more their point, which is shown by how often they reuse words the other just used - to show they’re listening to one another. In contrast, there’s no overlap between them and their parents when talking). But theirs doesn’t, because the parents are so busy looking backwards and bickering, they completely miss the important stuff, and two kids die for no reason.
Hate on Romeo and Juliet, but pick a better reason than it being a lousy romance because…it’s not a romance. It never was. So of course by that standard it’s lousy 😂
i wonder if their parents even know what the feud was over.
