I have to tell y'all about the interaction I just had.
I was walking home from work and passed an older lady walking her dog. We did that kinda polite smile and nod but she gave me a bit of a weird look. I didn’t think much of it at first, sometimes it can be hard to tell what gender I am at first glance, especially if I’m wearing a mask. But then she said:
“Uhm, excuse me? Quick question?”
“Oh, uh, sure”
“I just want to ask why you’re wearing a facemask?Do you think you’re going to get the virus walking around outside all by yourself?”
“Oh, I’m wearing it as a fashion accessory.” Which wasn’t entirely untrue it’s a cute mask. This seemed to trip her up a bit, and the situation was already extremely awkward so I just started walking away. After about ten feet, she SHOUTS after me.
“WELL I THINK YOU’D PROBABLY LOOK A LOT CUTER WITHOUT IT ON!!”
The way she talked it felt like one of those situations where an extremely online person “finally spots one of those libcuck pro-maskers in public and goes in for a chance to Own them” and the illusion broke a bit when I said something she didn’t expect, or didn’t instantly start crying like a lunatic.
For context I live in one of the most conservative counties in the entire US, and I dress in a very Gender Non-Conforming way. This sort of interaction happens every once in a while and it’s always extremely awkward.
