there is a problem with the american education system when

when getting 6 hours of sleep is a “really good night’s sleep” because you spend so much time at school, then doing homework, and (god forbid) any hobbies/extracurriculars

when the only “counselors” available to you have little or no psychological knowledge and will contact your parents and tell them you were there

when school lunch tastes, looks, and smells like cardboard, and is often unavailable to lower income students, but we are reprimanded for not eating healthily enough

when kids can not eat lunch for every single day of the year and not a single adult will ask them why

when anxiety is interpreted as “nervousness” and depression is interpreted as “laziness” and any sort of disorder or disability, mental or physical, is utterly ignored or ridiculed

when you have to fake sick on multiple days throughout the year because school takes so much out of you that on some days you cannot tolerate it

when you are forced to be around people who are toxic to your mental/emotional health, and if you ask to switch to a different class because of those people you’ll be told to “just ignore them”

when students are forced to participate in activities they are not comfortable doing such as presentations in front of the class in which failure to comply results in a zero

when teachers assign an hour (sometimes more, especially for advanced/AP classes) of homework for you to complete and most of it is nothing but “busy work” (work that serves no purpose other than to take up time)

when tests can count for 85% of your overall grade so no matter how much effort you put into that class, a bad test or poor test taking skills can result in bad/failing grades

when you miss school due to illness and have to complete 3+ days worth of work and turn it in the next day or in 2 days and if you don’t complete/turn it in the teachers act like “well you shouldnt have gotten sick then”

when sports teams get new equipment practically every year and the music/art/drama/etc departments are literally using costumes/instruments/supplies from 10+ years ago and can barely afford to purchase music or supplies or pay for repairs

when a teacher can give a bad test that everyone fails and its our fault

when a teacher can put up notes but not actually teach at all and blame us for failing

when teachers are forced to base their entire class around a certain curriculum but the standardized test is completely different

when a standardized test determines your value

when a student is struggling and no matter what theyre struggling with, its their fault, they should just work harder

when pretty much any student in high school will tell you that they do not like school

when a student’s hopes and passions are discouraged as being impractical and if ur not good at math/science ur basically told that youll never have a decent job and treated like hopeless, pointless waste of space

when teachers/staff can discriminate based off of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, WHATEVER, and reporting it will only put u into a worse situation

when school dress codes are ridiculously unfair towards girls and lower girls’ self esteem and teaches girlsthat her body is something to be ashamed of

when sex ed classes was nothing but teaching us statistics about STDs and that “abstinence is 100% effective”

when without a scholarship college is nearly impossible to afford

when we’re expected to know what we want to do for the rest of our lives and where we want to go to college by the time we’re 16

when students are so stressed that they turn to drugs just to keep their heads above water

when students are taking their own lives and nobody notices or cares

fuCKIN THIS

Adding on to this:

When you’re told to meet a teacher before or after school when you can’t and you utterly fail because you didn’t come when you were supposed to

When it’s perfectly fine for a teacher to complain about a student but a student can’t complain about a teacher yet both things are be important

When you’re asked to explain why you didn’t complete your homework but you’re not allowed to “give excuses”

When you’re being compared to someone else because you can’t do what they can or think they can do (in this situation a simple “well I am not [blah blah name thing here] and I am not as capable of doing things they do, so don’t expect me to quickly zoom though my math class this semester because I am supposedly [blah blah name thing here]” would be a legit reply)

When you get detention for simply looking in a slightly different direction making everyone assume you weren’t paying attention

When you aren’t allowed to express your emotions or opinions

When all of your personal goals are replaced with being on time and turning things in

When in order to graduate high school you have to make an online website and portfolio through your all of your high school years, and if you don’t complete it you are automatically a hopeless piece of garbage that will never get a good job

When you’re not supposed to turn to your friends for help even if the teachers refuse to give you the help you deserve

When you get in trouble for coughing and sneezing in class (no joke, this happened to my friend in middle school)

When raising your voice also gets you in trouble for being a distraction or disturbance to the class

When correcting someone is considered rude

I’m done here, you’re welcome..

This is why I’m fucked up.

An important thing to remember is that up until only a few years ago, the internet was like a sea of tiny, isolated islands. The biggest social outlets were forums, each with its own status quo, and the biggest, most visible ones were most often run by ambivalent moderators who encouraged “civil discussion” even if it meant letting grotesquely prejudiced shitheads have their “equal say.”

People who had any sensitivity to a lot of issues were often just run off and had to stick to smaller, more private outlets. Forums for trans people, abuse survivors, anyone different from the acceptable mainstream were treated as trolling targets and often crumbled under the onslaught.

What we’re NOW seeing, across all this social media like tumblr and twitter, are people coming out of hiding, showing their true feelings and identities as they discover they’re not as alone as they thought.

The people who chalk this up to some kind of SJW special snowflake bandwagon are people still living in the internet’s dark ages. They don’t get that this diversity and compassion was always there, but hidden under their mountains of fake edgy bullshit. That’s what pisses them off so much: they thought the internet was a free-for-all paradise to take nothing seriously and be as big an asshole as you want, but that was nothing but a facade all along. It was the result of people who thought they HAD to act that way in order to avoid becoming targets.

Now we’re finding out which ones were just legitimately terrible people to the core and they’re all in panic mode over it.

There is an interesting counterpoint to this, and that is while the open nature of tumblr and twitter have made it easier for us to find one another, it has also made it harder for us to set the boundaries and borders that are necessary to have truly safe spaces.

Forum software (or even LiveJournal) gave us the ability to create self-moderated spaces, where communities could define their own rules and enforce them by removing access from offenders.  The well-defined space of a community or forum helped contextualize content, and allowed for different groups to fulfill their legitimate but mutually exclusive needs without sparking endless flamewars.

Granted, these closed communities were a lot harder to discover, let alone become a part of.  Social media has done wonders for that, and I am grateful for it.  But I’ve seen so much conflict arise from the fact that people want to form safe spaces within these sites, and it is simply not possible to do so when the environment is completely open.  It would be nice if we could merge the discoverability of tumblr with the community controls of, say, LiveJournal.

Saaaaame. It’s not that wank never existed before (mod wanks were the stuff of legends), but at least it was possible to create a community where the members agreed on standards of behavior. 99% of the shit I see on Tumblr is the inherent tension of trying to pretend that millions of people are one cohesive community, when we’re not. We’re actually millions of intersecting, overlapping social networks, and my dash experience could be radically different to that of my followers. Also, my needs could be radically different to that of my followers. Tumblr, Twitter, any public social network are inherently unsafe spaces, and it is dangerous to forget that.

Look at this guy. He’s so young and creative, he created something seriously milestone-ish in one way or another…. I hope people will be kind to him and won’t pressure him into a corner. Having twitter is him sayin “oh I trust you guys, so I share a bit of my personal life with you all because I care about you caring about me as a person”. The game is 3 months old and is already this popular, whetever this young lad decides to do we should be able to respect… He created the game because he wanted this nearly-flawless idea come true and share it with the world so you’d have a good time with it - IT IS NOT A LIFELONG DEDICATION. It will have to end at some point so he can go on and create something even more amazing maybe. I’d rather like something small and good enough to make a closure than be given a second game of it that would let me say in the end “this was not that good as the original” (I think that is actually one of the worst things that can happen to a game as this - ppl being overhyped and then becoming monsters if they did not get what they expected). Just imagine all the game-related popular blogs and websites tearing the continuation apart in reviews and critiques if it would not meet up to expectations (HL3 anyone? No wonder Valve is silent about it :’D). I think it would not be healthy for the game, it would be bad for the creator (since he still so young) and it would make the fans look really rabid. So whatever he plans to do, I want to be patient and whatever he is willing to give, I will be happy with it. I hope people will stay cool about it all and keep being respectful to this talented and humble person.
