I usually don’t reblog posts about cultural appropriation because Tumblr tends to think that any kind of sharing of culture, even by the people who are the owners of said culture, is appropriation. But this post is good; this one has clear examples of how black culture and any non-white culture is usually seen as either “exotic” or seen badly, until the media puts it through a lens of whiteness and profits off it. Black women especially deal with this when it comes to beauty standards and the beauty industry, and it hurts them immensely. Black women have every right to be upset over this; they turn on their TVs and look at magazines where the next white girl is “setting a trend with rows” while they’re told that cornrows and their natural hair is “unprofessional” at their workplace, for example. It also talks about colorism, which is a spectrum of racism we generally ignore. This is important
One of the only times I share something like this, for the very same reason. Profit and media direct this line of bigotry, racism, and anything else under the sun that can fall into this umbrella.
Fact is, I’m white; “caucasian”. I don’t follow any trend set by big media and fashion. I don’t try to be what I’m not. And I respect and appreciate any heritage or culture that’s different from mine.
I’m so tired of seeing these things being posted and advertised. It’s a sham, to market it for profit. When it’s stealing and bleaching from another culture/heritage, plain and simple.
All of this matters. And I’m so sick of it being this way.
