Literally everything Tumblr is saying about this incident with the Pope is stupid as shit and just makes for a good reminder that Contemptible Unpopular Nerds remain Contemptible, Unpopular, and Nerds. Their criticism of the act ignores that the act was done knowingly for symbolic reasons, as is traditional. The criticism of the message is classic "ew, Contemptible Unpopular Nerds trying to get us to stop feeling Contempt for their Unpopularity".

I think what Matpat did was a bit dumb but everyone is grotesquely overexaggerating how dumb it was in order to sneer at people who have feelings about unpopular things
Was it dumb? Undertale is arguably the most Catholic video game ever made.
That’s not why he gave the code for it, though, he gave the code for it due to (what appears to me to be) his inability to seriously ask himself if anyone has ever had the thoughts or emotions he’s having, and thus concluding everything he thinks and experiences is incredibly new and important and has to be shared. This video game says we should be nice to each other, this is new, the Pope needs to know about this!
There are video games that would be good ideas to give to the Pope as a symbolic gesture (like giving Obama the Witcher 2 made perfect sense, as it was part of a bundle of Polish cultural works that the nation of Poland was proud of). Undertale was not one of those games. Matpat’s reasoning for thinking it was was cringey and idiotic. But people shitting on him because he had any emotions about a video game, or dared to bring up a video game to an important person, or thought there was such a thing as symbolic importance that a video game might fit into, those people are just piling on to express contempt for an unpopular person.
His reason behind it was Because it’s a game that promotes peaceful alternatives, breakaways from stereotypes and acceptance. All of which pope Francis has been fighting (figuratively) for. That’s what the symbolism behind it is. The reason he even chose a game is because he was chosen to represent YouTube gaming at the event and the gift had to be reflective of the culture being represented.

Matpat was chosen because he has a large following. Same reason celeberties are chosen for whatever events they attend. Because mat pat is a celebrity. YouTube is no different than tv or movies.

Mat pat acknowledged that and pointed out it’s more symbolic. Pope Francis mad eit clear he doesn’t need fancy shit and is all for symbolism when he swapped out the golden throne with a regular chair everyone else has to use.

Actually he didn’t say that people fearing Muslims was evolutionary, he said that it’s because the only thing you hear on the news in America regarding Muslims is negative which creates a certain stigma. Well it’s true. He spoke to many people about what YouTube is and what gaming is and the culture behind it. When you act like YouTube and gaming can’t be an important cultural thing you sound just like baby boomers complaining about everything new. I don’t see how it’s any different from when Eva longoria met the pope. Mat pat is a celebrity. He has many fans and a successful show. And one of the biggest reasons why YouTube having representation is important is because it’s one step closer to being recognized as a legitimate entertainment source.
