my grandparents have to lock their car doors when they go to sunday mass because people have been breaking in to unlocked cars and leaving entire piles of zucchini

i feel like i should’ve added more context when i posted this. my grandparents live in a rural area where farmers and casual gardeners alike are, at this point in the year, suddenly being hit with unexpectedly abundant zucchini crops. there aren’t just some random vandals leaving zucchinis in people’s cars for the hell of it, this is the work of some very exasperated, probably very elderly, folks who have more zucchini than they know what to do with

Yep. You can also expect to find a bag of zucchini on your porch.

My grandfather once found his neighbor stealing his tomatoes out of his garden at three in the morning. Red-handed, with a basket of the nearly-ripened ones.  He thought he was going to find gophers or something, but no, here’s Henry, taking his tomatoes. The best ones.

There was a long pause between them.

My grandfather (allegedly) said, “Henry… it’s OK.  You can take some tomatoes if you want them.”

Henry sighed in relief.

“But,” my grandfather said, “you have to take two zucchini for every tomato.”

There was another long silence.  “That’s a harsh bargain, John,” said Henry.  “But I accept.  I’ll tell Joe up the street, too.”

My grandfather said, “Tell Joe he needs to take three.”

So as you may have heard, “About Ray” is a movie about a teenage trans boy named Ray going through his transition and the problems that trans men face.

Problem is: he will be played by a cis girl (Elle Fanning)

By casting a trans boy as a cis girl, it’s saying that trans men can be equated to women and that there is no difference between the two. Erasure of trans people is not representation. End of story.

The trailer also has transphobic lines in it as “born in a girl’s body” to name one in particular. The two main writers are both cis as well, so it is very unlikely that a transgender person worked on the script. (Additional sources are welcome)

This has nothing to do with the skills of the actress chosen nor the previous works of the writers. This is about actual trans people being swept under the rug for cis people to feel proud of themselves for being an ally as well as the continued erasure of trans people from their own experiences (ie the Stonewall movie).

Boycott this movie. Trans people should be recognized for what they go through and accomplish, and NOT pushed aside for an “inspiring” story to please cis audiences.

Okay, but consider this alternative:

What if we supported and encouraged representation, and didn’t treat it as a zero-sum game where we can only ever support one movie involving or related to trans people, but instead could support more than one?

I don’t at all see how you get from “two main writers are cis” to “very unlikely that a trans person worked on the script”. I mean, yes, Hollywood is crazy, but people do consult on things like this a lot?

And… I think there’s a real problem when you start picking things that many trans adults say about themselves, and believe to be the best way for them to relate to their experiences, and call those things “transphobic”. Lots of people say things like “born in a girl’s body”, and that’s actually pretty much totally fine by me. You get to decide how you relate to your body. If someone feels that “born in a girl’s body” is the best description for them, that’s up to them, and what I’d think is “transphobic” is telling them they can’t say or think that because it’s wrong.

But… The really big thing that bugs me is claiming that casting a cis actress to play a trans dude is “saying that trans men can be equated to women and that there is no difference between the two”. That testifies to some kind of very fundamental failure to understand what “acting” is. Actors don’t play people they are, they play people they look like. And by and large, cis girls and untransitioned trans dudes look like each other, as categories. So this is not, at all, “erasure”.

I mean, yeah, I think it might be better to cast a trans guy, but there are a lot of medical issues and actor mental health issues you’re gonna have if you try to make a guy who just finally got rid of those damn boobs put them on again for a movie, or whatever. So maybe they tried and failed. Maybe they didn’t think of it. Maybe they put out a casting call and got zero responses. Who knows?

But on the whole, if the movie is successful and people watch it and get some kind of idea that trans people are real and are not evil, I and many of my friends will be safer, and I care a lot more about this than I do about yelling at people for not doing everything perfectly.

Should a trans man portray this person on the movie, he would have to go off hormones which could set them back years.

That, btw, seems to be the most common thing lately. I had a lady who couldn’t get her TV working (going to an HDTV from a tube one) so she brings her cable box in expecting us to fix it and I try to explain that we can’t do cable in store and that these TV’s hook up differently and she just keeps cutting me off to tell me the same thing over and over and that she doesn’t understand what I’m saying and I finally had to get someone from Geek Squad to tell her to get with her cable company.

I understand not getting tech, but when someone’s explaining something to you, even if you don’t like what they’re saying, making an EFFORT to understand would be like…great.

I think I did something like this a long time ago but might as well do it again. (Includes stuff from this post that I agreed with.)

• More game jumping
  
• Mr. Litwak getting home console games into his arcade
  
• The Core Four meeting versions of themselves from different consoles
  
• Fix-It Felix Sr. (bonus points if voiced by Ron Howard)
  
• Bringing in some stuff that was cut out of the first movie (Most notably, XTreme Easy Livin’ 2)
  
• More screentime for some of the side characters like the Bad Anon members, the Nicelanders, the Sugar Rush racers and Sour Bill
  
• Turbo can come back, either in flashbacks that go into more detail on how he took over Sugar Rush and got the Konami Code or have a new Turbotime game come in and we see a totally different version of him.
  
• Ralph being single and NOT ready to mingle (but if Disney/John Lasseter/Rich Moore insists, interweave the love interest into the movie seamlessly and effectively)
  
• The Mario brothers 
  
• More scenes at Tapper’s bar and just watching the game characters interact with each other. 
  
• More banter between Ralph and the Surge Protector (and Nicelander Gene)
  
• Another really awesome end credits scene.
  
• Soundtrack stuff. Owl City and Skrillex need to come back, and we need a duet with John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman. Also, more 80s music for the trailers.

Also:

• Core Four family shenanigans (i.e. Ralph, Vanellope, Felix, and Calhoun interacting amongst themselves all together during their adventure because we didn’t really see that in the first movie other than in the credits). Tammy is Vanellope’s “cool aunt” female role model, Felix is like the uncle who doesn’t have the heart to tell her no when she does the puppy eyes, Ralph and Tammy are drinking buddies or something, etc.
  
• Hero’s Cuties - I’m curious about their lives together, the development of their relationship, and how Tammy has come into her own outside of her in-game persona, since she was never really “off-duty” in the first movie (other than the epilogue and credits). Also I need to hear their cute nicknames for each other and the affectionate habits they have together. Does Felix make Tammy feel better when she has a PTSD episode, now that he understands? Does Tammy occasionally pick up her tiny cute husband and carry him around as just a regular routine and nobody bats an eye about it? Did Felix build a cozy little house in his game for himself and his lovely wife like we all thought? I hope so!
• Ralph and Vanellope being buddies and what the Sugar Rush kids think of Ol’ Ham Hands. I bet once they got over their fear, they just started to climb all over him like a mobile jungle gym.
• Even if it’s just part of one scene, I want Kohut and Calhoun being bros. Can we get some confirmation on Kohut being Tammy’s corporal/second-in-command? It seems like they’d have an interesting dynamic.
• Getting to see more of Fix-It Felix Jr. and Hero’s Duty because we didn’t get as much time there compared to Sugar Rush
• Speaking of Sugar Rush, I’d rather see the SR racers, Nicelanders, Hero’s Duty soldiers, and other miscellaneous arcade denizens we’ve met do important side character stuff instead of bringing in more minor characters for that purpose (seconded on Bad-Anon getting in on this too)
• I greatly second you on Fix-It Felix Sr. (the new popularity of Fix-It Felix Jr.’s bonus mode with Q*bert and friends results in Litwak getting an original Fix-It Felix), flashback/different Turbo if he appears at all, single Ralph, ‘80s music in the trailer, interactions at Tapper’s (I want Felix to be old friends with Mario and Luigi, but just as a minor thing rather than making the bros major characters), game-jumping, and awesome credits
• The rest of what you said is also cool, these are just my favorites

A bit of a ramble, but what do you guys think?
