From the ISO’s kick-off forum “Why You Should Join the Socialists & Change the World”.

“Starbucks baristas make about $9/hr. If they make 3 drinks for $5 each, they pay for their hour of their labor & supplies. At 5 drinks they pay for themselves & a coworker. At 10 the whole store for an hour. At peak hours they make 2-300 drinks & see none of the profits. Every drink after 3 is theft.”

It honestly blows my mind when I see adult writers and journalists talking about how fanfiction is “ruining fiction” because “kids are investing all their time and talent into something that doesn’t matter instead of applying their skills to creating something original that they could actually make money off of.”

Like, imagine if people had that attitude toward other things - it’d be completely ridiculous:

“I can’t believe my sixth grader would rather use the basketball hoop to play Knockout instead of organizing competitive games and striving to join the NBA. What a lazy, unmotivated kid.”

“YouTube videos? Just making free videos on the internet for anyone to see whenever they want? Why don’t you just produce a movie? A whole fucking movie. You’re in high school, you can figure it out.”

“Are you really so uncreative that the only songs you can play on the piano are ones other people wrote? The only real piano players are the ones who write their own music, I’m just saying. People like you are the reason originality is dead.”

SOMETIMES PEOPLE DO THINGS BECAUSE THEY’RE FUN! MAKING THINGS AND SHARING THEM WITH OTHER PEOPLE IS FUCKING FUN! NOT EVERYTHING IS ABOUT MAKING MONEY!!!

Also writing fan fiction is great practice for writing original stories, plots, editing, time management, grammar, sentence structure, etc. so don’t hate those who are practicing something.

Dante’s Inferno is self-insert Bible fanfiction. Most Renaissance and Medieval art that isn’t portraiture is Bible fanart. Lord of the Flies is a dark, AU fanfic of a previous book that had a bunch of English boys getting stranded on an island where everything turned out just hunky dory.  Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar is fanfiction.  Lancelot and Guinevere are French fanfiction additions to the King Arthur myth.

90% of all Disney movies ever made are fanfiction.  In Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid? The little mermaid DIES.  In Beauty and the Beast, Beauty has two sisters, and her father is a merchant, not an inventor. The villagers never storm the castle. The Disney movies are reinterpretations of pre-existing stories aka fanfiction. Is anyone shitting on Disney for writing ‘fanfiction’?

BBC’s Sherlock is modernAU fanfiction.  Elementary is modernAU always-a-girl!John fanfiction.  BBC’s Merlin is fanfiction.

Age of Ultron is fanfiction.

Fanfiction is natural and has happened since the dawn of time. Stop looking down on people (and I gotta say, a lot of the people writing fanfic that I know are female) who write fanfiction for fun and their own enjoyment.

I have read fanfiction better than actual booms. I have seen fanfiction better than the movies. Like stupid Mario brother is way better than many Mario games and infinitely better than the movie or show.

The year Hogwarts reopens

  • The Great Hall is quiet when the first years come in. They are watched by everyone else, but even the young ones can see gaps in the tables, and they knew it was from the students who would never come back.
  • The hat does not just sing about the houses this year. It tells a tale of the Hufflepuffs who lay down their lives, smart Ravenclaws who used every trick they knew, cunning Slytherins who protected the young from a war and brave Gryffindors who fought alongside them all.
  • One by one the first years were sorted, and they slowly filled the gaps in the table.
  • The headteacher stands, and before they eat, she reminds them all that houses only show your traits, not who you will turn out to be. And then she tells them that rules are changing. Houses are allowed - and should- mix during meals.
  • Nothing happens at first. But then a few stand up, mostly siblings, and they change tables. At first there is a strange silence but slowly the room relaxes and new friendships start to grow.
  • By the end of the first week, most people sit at different tables every meal.
  • By the end of the first term, the four tables are no longer separate. They are now pushed together into a giant square, so students can sit all together.
  • The teachers watch on, shocked it worked so well, but also pleased, because no child will ever be alone or feel out of place, and the friendships between houses finally looks the way the four founders always wanted it to be.

Every time I see this I just bow down and then curl into a little ball and hug something soft.

I am proud of making you have this reaction

Just dont imagine some first years wondering why there are so many ghosts of children.

where is the lie though?

It’s a lie of omission.

You’re comparing highly polished mainstream examples of iconic Japanese media to low budget, indie, and amateur american works. If you wanted to be fair the second image should look more like this:

image

The cultural exchange between American and Japanese art, particularly in animation, is hardly a one way streak.

image

Here we have Panty and Stocking, which boasts an artistic style that draws heavily upon modern western animation with it’s hard outlines and comical proportions. Shows like Dexter’s Laboratory barrow dynamic posses, dramatic framing, and highly expressive faces form anime and manga. Early anime and manga developed it’s distinct big eyes and childlike features by taking cues from western animation of the 20′s and 30′s

Betty Boop, in particular, was immensely popular in Japan. Her creators even made this short in appreciation of her Japanese fan-base.

the only thing I can say is that it was Drawn Together that influenced Panty and Stocking, and it was Disney’s Bambi that Osamu Tesuka (The Mighty Atom/Astro Boy, Black Jack, Kimba The White Lion, Princess Sapphire) went on record saying influenced his art career… I get what was being shown, but I just wanted to share some facts

Panty and Stocking was also inspired by the cartoons made by Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. In fact the character of Chuck was a homage to Gir from Invader Zim.

image

I would also like to note that one of Osamu Tezuka’s main inspirations was Disney comic artist and writer Carl Barks, who’s probably most famous for his Donald Duck comics and creating the character of Scrooge McDuck. Osamu Tezuka even sent a holiday fan letter to Carl Barks once.

image

Oh, almost forgot. On the American side Teen Titans was heavily inspired by Japanese animation.

So yah, when you cherry pick for the post, you look like a bigot. Congrats op for swiftly becoming the biggest idiot on tumbr

Pearl took advantage of Garnet’s trust

Amethyst kept the truth secret until the last second instead of confronting them immediately and privately

Garnet pressured Amethyst into fusing when she was uncomfortable with it at the moment

All three gems fucked up tonight don’t put everthing on one

Okay, no. Putting the others’ screwups on the same level as Pearl’s is a disservice to both them and to Pearl’s narrative.

The worst you can say for Amethyst and Garnet is that they reacted poorly in the moment. Amethyst didn’t know how best to deal with a volatile interpersonal situation so she waited longer than she should have. Garnet was indelicate but ultimately she had no other choice: regardless of Amethyst’s feelings, that tower had to come down ASAP, and a fusion was the only way to do that.

Both of these are more forgivable in part because they were reactions. Reactions have a time limit, and we often aren’t prepared for them. It’s hard to arrive at the ideal solution. Pearl’s mistake, on the other hand, was proactive. She created the situation. There was no time pressure on her, there was no imperative that required her to act other than her own fucked up emotions. All she had to do was not do the thing.

But moreso than that, the difference is that everyone else’s fuckups were interpersonal. As fucked up as Pearl’s actions were toward Garnet especially, it really pales next to the fact that she willfully endangered the entire planet. Like, look at that in perspective. Every time she rebuilt that tower, she increased the chance of Peridot’s message reaching homeworld. Which could easily lead to literally billions of deaths. Her own, and her friends’, but also uncountable children like Connie dying screaming, burned to death under the particle blasts of homeworld gems, or starving slowly on a used-up world. Planetary genocide.

All because Pearl missed feeling strong. Or, more likely, because she missed intimacy. And also, I think, because she never really cared about Earth, beyond whatever emotional bells it rang for her with regards to Rose. She cared because Rose cared, and she sticks with it for Rose’s memory, but also because she doesn’t know what else to do. But when a more immediate emotional need arose, she threw the entire human race (and her revolutionary buddies) under the bus two nights in a row, and to all appearances would have just kept doing it until she was caught or Yellow Diamond finally sent a fleet. She sold out everything Rose fought and died for to get a few moments of emotional stability.

Isn’t that interesting? That a need so incredibly simple could lead her to become so desperate, so weak, as to make her fuck up in such a huge, potentially devastating way, while still being so incredibly understandable?

And doesn’t it put the others in such an interesting situation? Dealing with a friend and ally who has fucked up in such a massive way that, regardless of whether they understand it (Amethyst does, Garnet really doesn’t), it can’t be allowed to continue under any circumstances? And on an even more upsetting level, dealing with the fact that their ally, much as they love her personally, was never really fighting for the right reasons, and can’t necessarily be trusted to keep their best interests at heart when the wind changes?

Pearl is an incredibly complex and deeply flawed character, and as a result this is a really, really great story. Simplifying what happened in “Cry for Help” to “everyone screwed up and hurt each others’ feelings” ignores most of what makes it worth telling.
