Going on a family vacation as an autistic person is hell. No I do not want to wake up at 10 am and spend the whole day in the sun drinking beer with uncle Todd. I don’t care if you think it’s embarrassing that I refuse to go out to dinner with all 10 of my cousins and drive them home when they get drunk. I will go down to the beach in the middle of the night while fully clothed and chase the crabs around in the dark and I will enjoy it.
“people who would fight the entire world for each other but complain and call each other stupid fucking idiots about it the entire time” is the ultimate relationship dynamic
No matter what a post on tumblr tries to tell you, your moral and ethical stances will never be determined by what you reblog and what you scroll past. Don’t let manipulation tactics force you into doing anything you don’t want to do.
I find it very interesting to note the times in which this post has a sudden resurgence. It often follows very stressful, upsetting events, where a lot of “REBLOG THIS OR YOU SUCK” posts start appearing on this site.
So I’ll say it again: it is okay if you come to tumblr to escape upsetting news. It is okay if you’re just here for fun and fandom. It is okay if you do not want to use your tumblr as a place to read about or spread the current events that are circulating. It is okay if you need a place to decompress and just relax. There are other ways to be involved in/support causes and you are allowed to set boundaries on social media platforms without it being indicative of your belief systems.
Your beliefs, values, ethics, and moral stances are not determined by whether or not you reblog something.
It also helps to remember that nobody else on tumblr can see what you’re scrolling past.
You clearly don’t have to, since we get along just fine without doing it. This just sounds like a great way to traumatise kids but the stats say that American kids tend to come out of high school with PTSD anyway so in for a penny I guess. Is there any data to suggest that this affects teen road accident statistics in any way or did someone just decide it sounded cool and impactful one day?
If this is a common US thing at all (and I doubt it - in fact I’d guess some or all of these tweets are complete fabrications), it’s recent. This didn’t happen when I went to high school and I’ve never personally heard of it happening anywhere else either.
Here’s a Wikipedia article about one such program. My high school did it. Also they lie about statistics. And at my school, people eulogized themselves and we were supposed to act respectful during it.
Also, the teachers were supposed to keep the scheduling a secret, but the German instructor warned us.
Yeah we had an actual dead persons parent come into the auditorium and tell us not to drink and drive. Probs didn’t have the budget for the smashed car and fake blood
yeah we had a legit wrecked car in the parking lot and they like used a thing to cut open the car so they could pull the theater kid out. i think there may have been a helicopter?
we didnt have an assembly about it but we did have the wrecked car and the “ghosts” iirc it was called shattered dreams or some shit. wreacking the car was a fundraising event where we paid $5 for a single hit with a baseball bat and $15 for a sledgehammer. the first hit was a raffle event and ofc every year the first one would go right for the windshield. during the day the “ghosts” would wander around everyone made the same joke where they point and say “I see dead people”
scientists in the 1990s, putting a Get More Purple gene attached to a harmless plant virus into an already purple petunia: please get more purple
the petunia, sensing an apparent honest to god Get More Purple Disease, using the previously undiscovered RNAi antiviral ability to shut down all other purple genes along with it just in case: you put VIRUS in petunia? you infect her with the More Purple?? oh! oh! her children shall bloom white! jail for mother, jail for mother for One Thousand Years!!!!
Ok so can someone explain to me how cryptocurrency pollutes? Like what crazy calculations are they running that they need enough brainpower to significantly effect things? Like I’m assuming what’s causing the pollution is increased electricity consumption but… how does sending lil pretend money tokens back and forth or whatever cause so much pollution?
Also, what the fuck is “mining”? How d'you mine… like bitcoin is not a naturally occurring resource, and I assume that you can’t just make it, cause that would make it instantly worthless… help?
So you get “coins” as a reward for performing the cryptographic calculations necessary to update the public ledger which is the blockchain. This is, by design, an increasingly complex and resource intensive process to slow down the collection of (intentionally finite) coins.
So every transaction with bitcoins requires the ledger to be updated with the current ownership of every already existing bitcoin, which also requires encrypting and decrypting a bunch of information and sharing it across the public ledger. So every transaction made with bitcoins increases the energy requirements of updating the ledger making it harder and harder to complete the latest version and get the coin which is a reward for doing that work.
There’s a lot I don’t fully understand myself but the long and short of it is that the actual value of any crypto currency is pretty much just what people agree on, except instead of a fiat currency where a government says it’s worth something and a mint that makes physical currency, there’s a bunch of nerds who agree that solving certain math problems is worth rewarding.
Feeling like adding on for a bit of context, I know it’s kind of hard to understand how mining for really any kind of crypto is hard to imagine, but seeing what a bitcoin mining facility looks like for the first time really helped me realize just how energy intensive it is.
See all these warehouses? They’re quite literally filled to the brim with specialized computers that do nothing but mine, each one filled with thousands of these computers, just row after row of this:
So all the power consumption winds up adding up like crazy.
Literally all of these should be seized, wiped, and dismantled, cryptocurrency needs to be annihilated as a concept
On top of that, it spikes the price of computer components that could otherwise be used for useful work, like science and engineering. If all that compute were still used (meaning we’re still polluting the same amount, even) but devoted to R&D we could solve a TON of actual, real world problems to make life better. Likely it could be used to solve some problems involving greening the economy, which means that the pollution would at least serve the purpose of decreasing future pollution.
