i think it’s really amazing how total strangers who have nothing in common but their shared love of a work of fiction will come together across distances and dedicate their time and energy working collaboratively to build an extensive, richly detailed fanon that completely fucking sucks

I have literally seen so much characterization and nuance(and you know, actual narrative meaning) sanded off of characters so that they can fit into the generic fandom mould for incorrect quotes or shipping art or fics, ending up as carbon copies of every other fandom’s sanded-down characters in the process
i know countless times that fandoms made fanon of such insignificant characters that when the background character did something that didnt adhere to fannon, the fans got pissed. i and my friends have been harrassed for portraying a background character in a different way that what fannon decided was right
