You need a degree in obscure internet history to fully understand why it’s called a rickroll.
You say “just” like the following text isn’t entirely incomprehensible to anybody not already familiar with obscure internet lore.
I’ve been online since 2000. I do not know what any of this means. I know “moot” means “mutual” these days, but judging from how old rickroll is, I bet “moot” didn’t mean “mutual” back then because “moot = mutual” is actually a Tumblr thing.
take this w a grain of salt i could be wrong but iirc:
-4chan moderator named moot created a word filter that turned all instances of the word “egg” to the word “duck” in the mid 2000s (2005? 6?)
-in a thread discussing egg rolls, this created the term “duck roll”. someone posted a picture of a duck in roller skates in response to this.
-links to the “duckroll” image were used similarly to rickrolling now
-the rest is pretty understandable
[ID: A comment from kaiasky, reading “isn’t it just moot s/egg/duck -> duckrolls -> duckroll image -> ‘rolling’ becomes a synonym for fake links -> rickroll'd”. End ID.]
Close enough.
Moot is the creator and owner of 4chan (which he created when he was 15), not just a moderator.
And the duck roll isn’t wearing roller skates, it’s got monster truck wheels
I still don’t understand why the filter changing egg to duck came about.
i go back in time to blow up blizzard hq before overwatch ever enters development
i look down at my gold locket with a picture of winston in it and hold it tight while shedding a tear, knowing it will shortly fade away from existence
soldier tf2 slowly fades in into winston’s place, same pose and expression and all
as a treat for the defunctland guy we should all try to convince elon musk that he would be so so so good at designing roller coasters
i think we as a society need to come together and admit that metroid prime isnt that good. its bosses are trivial and tedious, its backtracking is far worse than any other metroid game up to that point. its got that chunk of padding where you gotta collect the chozo artifacts thats like the wind waker triforce shard hunt but even worse. and the final boss is so goddamn boring. bosses where all you gotta do is wait for minutes on end until it does the one thing that can make it vulnerable because its completely immune to all of your attacks unless you stand in a pool of phazon that he himself spawns is just bad boss design. it takes the worst elements of nintendo bosses and cranks it up to 11.
It’s incredible to watch Republicans spend 4 full years bragging about cutting every environmental and safety regulation possible and then turn around and blame the Democratic administration for not fixing their mess fast enough in 2 years.
As a Progressive, Biden and the Dems do not get a free pass from me. They sided with the rail companies during the recent rail workers’ rights fight. Biden made a freaking strike ILLEGAL when, in addition to paid breaks and sick days, they were also demanding repairs. This is what separates us from the MAGA: we don’t follow our leaders blindly and try (in vain?) to hold them accountable.
However, the Neocons have been actively trying to destroy all workers’ rights and environmental laws in the idiotic belief that the industries can regulate themselves. Ignoring a problem is bad. Actively helping a problem is worse. Actively helping a problem and then claiming it wasn’t your fault is despicable.
The trope where a character overhears something out of context and assumes the worst is usually annoying and bad but I really think it works well in Shrek
We, the audience, know that Fiona is talking about herself but, regardless, she’s calling herself these terrible things because she is an ogre. If Fiona is these things because she is is an ogre what does that make Shrek?
If Fiona says no one could love her because she is an ogre, she is saying that Shrek is also unloveable whether she wants to or not.
Imo the scene is a really good portrayal of how when you talk poorly of yourself or others for having a trait, you’re also talking about every other person who shares that trait; even if you love them or think what you’re saying doesn’t apply to them.
Not going to lie, I saw the word “Shrek” and never expected this to be a deep post.
