I think what made the Mythbusters special was this: of course they would always ask, and test, “could the circumstances of the myth produce the described result?” but they ALSO always took the extra step to “under what circumstances, no matter how extreme, could the described result be achieved? ” and it was fucking spectacular every time

Yeah and they weren’t allowed to use that quarry anymore after that episode because the shockwave from the blast shattered windows like 10 miles away. The Mythbusters were batshit insane and 12 yo me absolutely loved it
Reminder, the circumstances were: “can explosives be used to blast hardened concrete out of a cement truck”.
They accidentally over shot it.
more specifically, they tested the myth as described (a single stick of dynamite used to break up dried cement to ease removal) and when it didn’t work they moved on to “how powerful an explosion would we need to break up the hardened cement” and that’s when they overshot and disintegrated the truck

concept: it’s not that fat pikachu and the original pikachu cry have been retconned, it’s that most pikachu are indeed as sleek and cute as the modern design whereas red’s absurdly strong pikachu, specifically, is enormous and round and makes a horrible noise and generally terrifies people.
