good example of creators keeping their actors in the dark: michael shur not telling manny jacinto, william jackson harper, or jameela jamil the truth about the good place until right before they filmed the scene where it’s revealed, because until that moment, their characters are also completely in the dark and have no idea what’s coming. also note that schur told ted danson before LONG before this, because danson’s character DID know the truth all along, and danson had to know too so he could play the role correctly.

bad example of creators keeping their actors in the dark: the russo brothers telling the actors the characters were at a wedding instead of a funeral (which is COMPLETELY different in tone, environment, and how people act) because ~no spoilers~

best example of creators keeping their actors in the dark: When they filmed The Goonies, none of the main cast were allowed to see the ship at the end of the film so when they shot for the first time, the kids would be as surprised as possible. When that scene was finally filmed, someone yelled “HOLY SHIT” and they couldn’t use that take.

Great example of creators keeping their actors in the dark: during the filming of empire strikes back, they recorded the iconic scene where they revealed what happened to lukes father by saying “obi wan killed your father” and later replaced the line with “I am your father” and the only people who knew about that part were james earl jones, mark hammil and george lucas and a everyone else working on set were believed the twist was that obi wan killed anakin.

2000 years later: “The strange glyphs appearing on gravestones from the early 21st century onward remain a mystery. These astoundingly complex patterns (no two exactly the same) have been found on many other 21st century artifacts, and are believed to have religious significance. Recovered images suggest they were probably sacred to the ancient North American god, Apple, and were meant to ensure that the departed would continue to be financially successful in the afterlife.”

As an archaeologist I can confirm that that is pretty much exactly what will happen in the future.
