this isn’t gonna be one or more of them being actively malicious or fucking around, it’s gonna be one of them going “hey are we fairly treating our contributors“ and the publisher says “yeah it’s taken care of” and, unfortunately, they’ll have believed it
i remember seeing the same bad take of “you should have known about it earlier” back when the scandal involving nick robinson. you know the thing where as soon as griffon was made aware he fired nick.

tl;dr - we were paid pennies for full page illustrations, the mcelroys didnt know and are now trying to get contributors fair compensation.
this goes to show how important it is to talk openly about your pay as a freelancer - it’s crucial to cultivate an industry environment with strongly enforced ethical pay standards, and in which the people with the power to do something about it know when something’s wrong.

Take from this, that you have power as an artist and even more so when you stick together.
Talk to your peers about pricing, contracts, deals that make you uneasy. No matter how young you are, how new to this, you deserve to be paid fairly for your labour.
