so you know how deep learning & neural network “AI training” is like, “here’s a task, and by trying billions of times the computer will eventually find the best way to achieve that task” ?
Someone is compiling a document of every time an AI ended up achieving the programmed goal in unintended ways, instead of what was actually meant, and it’s an amazing read. (you can also submit your own examples)
Creatures bred for speed grow really tall and generate high velocities by falling over
When repairing a sorting program, genetic debugging algorithm GenProg made it output an empty list, which was considered a sorted list by the evaluation metric.
Evaluation metric: “the output of sort is in sorted order” Solution: “always output the empty set”
Evolved player makes invalid moves far away in the board, causing opponent players to run out of memory and crash
Reward-shaping a soccer robot for touching the ball caused it to learn to get to the ball and vibrate touching it as fast as possible
RL agent that is allowed to modify its own body learns to have extremely long legs that allow it to fall forward and reach the goal.
Just want to come back to this post and add this amazing example as well
Thinking about that fallout 76 ad where like 9 people stand around and watch a ground burst nuke go off like it’s a pretty firework is like. Genuinely upsetting. Not only can I not think of any worse way to reflect the themes of the series, with the opening of Fallout specifying that WWIII only lasted an hour and with it destroyed almost all life on the planet at the hands of nuclear weapons, but it’s also just an irreverent and frankly dangerous way to discuss the most horrible weapons mankind has ever made. It would be different if it were actually some kind of satire, some kind of distinct point being made, but it’s literally just LOOK NUKES COOL and it’s more a re-invigoration of the cold war’s nuclear obsession than it is an indictment of it.
shut up hippie
This incredibly accurate post got everyone with bad taste Big Mad
i don’t mean to sound fake deep but the reason 2018 felt so long was because we’re being fed what’s trending at such a rapid rate that we literally can’t remember half of the shit that even happened anymore. “Black Panther came out in February!” Marvel releases so many movies a year that we completely forget about the last movie as soon as a new one comes out and it repeats in a vicious cycle. “Tide Pods/Ugandan Knuckles was in January!” The life span of memes have been rapidly declining for years and it’s gotten to the point where the average lifespan of a meme is about 2 weeks and then the next thing gets popular and then that lasts for 2 weeks and it just keeps going. We’re literally losing our sense of time because of our rapid consumption of media and pop culture.
On the plus side that means it’s much harder for corporations to try to advertise to us since by the time they learn what we’re into we’ve moved onto the next thing
APPARENTLY MY MOMS BOYFRIEND HAD JURY DUTY WITH JOHN MULANEY AND WAS SITTING NEXT TO HIM
imagine going to the jury and seeing him like i wouldn’t be able to keep it together emotionally i’d just be disqualified the plaintiff would be like “he stole my assets” and i’d be like I Have Fired The Criminal Catcher
In 2019 we grow from sex positivity to sex responsibility, meaning we:
call out shitty people who are just abusers and using kink/polyamory to mask it and stop supporting them
recognize that sometimes hypersexuality can be a form a self-harm for some people
keep kinks and fetishes in appropriate spaces and not bringing them out into general public spaces and thereby involving people in scenes they aren’t consenting to
understand that some fetishes are inherently unhealthy and some illegal to actually engage in for good reason and ignoring that is irresponsible at best
