Do you guys ever think about how the Fire nation is seen as the only faction that went crazy after the avatar left when really, every faction was driven to the extreme version of themselves without Aang?
The Fire nation was just the most obvious because without someone to guide them fire did what it does best, spread. Fire is the clan of Power so they let it consume them, they could not have power without taking it from others which is why it became a problem for all the other factions.
Earth, the people of Substance, were also out of control. They clung to their traditions and fought every change Aang tried to bring to them. Places like Ba Sing Se were able to exist, a stale fortress that literally killed to keep things the same.
And the Water clan, the people of Change, were consumed by their flexibility. Spreading their people too thin over the world, forgetting culture they lost their community. They threw their warriors into war, chasing just the slimmest chance of a change in circumstances, which is how great tribes like Katara and Sokka’s lost their strength.
Basically what I’m saying is, everything did not change when the Fire nation attacked, the big event that caused all the chaos was the avatar leaving. Fire sought Power, Earth clung to Substance, Water could only Change. All the factions became the “extreme” versions of themselves, fire was just the easiest to see.
“Organic” isn’t better for you or for the environment. It actually means nothing of any significance at best and is sometimes even the more wasteful, more hazardous option.
A shitload of “natural” food including a lot of imported produce is grown and harvested through slave labor in inhumane conditions.
Pizza, fried chicken, french fries, fast food, candy bars and chips ARE nutritious. They are loaded with good things. Just because they have an abundance of excess fats and might not be healthy as a staple doesn’t mean they are “nutritionless” or that their calories are “empty.” Those are hokey buzzwords pushed by the people in charge of how much you pay for the alternatives.
Eating healthier costs more. Much more. Looking down on people for their reliance on cheaper food is extremely classist and expecting everyone to be able to live off fresh veggies and cage-free meats is insultingly unrealistic in the modern world.
“Processed” literally only means the food went through some kind of automated process. This can be literally the exact same thing a human being would have done to the food for it to be labeled “unprocessed.” Being processed does not make something less healthy.
Chemicals with long, scary names are part of nature. An apple is full of compounds you probably can’t pronounce. A shorter ingredients label only means they didn’t bother listing all 300 things the product is actually made of and HAS to be made of.
Preservatives, artificial flavors and other additives are not the devil. Most are harmless and in general they are part of the reason you haven’t already starved to death or died of a food borne illness.
MSG is not bad for you at all.
The fact that something might be made of “scrap” meats like pig snouts or chicken necks only means one thing: that we didn’t waste perfectly normal, edible meat.
I DON’T KNOW HOW I FORGOT THIS IN MY FIRST VERSION OF THIS POST BUT GMO’S ARE NOT DANGEROUS TO EAT. GMO’S ARE SAVING LIVES. YOU’VE ALREADY EATEN GMO’S BEFORE YOU EVEN KNEW THE TERM. IT’S FINE. EAT THEM.
So I’ve literally done this twice before and so have several other people but here are sources on all of these, most of them fairly recent academic studies or otherwise the most up-to-date I could find:
“Processed” always gets me, it’s like yeah even that delicious homemade salsa you brought to the party is processed - the moment you took a knife to the tomatoes it underwent processing
My favorite thing about Cheddar the dog is that either Holt or Kevin named him Cheddar and I honestly don’t know which option is funnier.
third, equally funny option: his name was already cheddar when they adopted him. both of them think it’s an absurd goddamn name but neither of them know you can just change an animal’s name if you don’t like it. no one ever told them and they’re both much too proper to even conceptualize this notion on their own. the dog was named cheddar and that’s very unfortunate but cheddar he will remain.
fourth, they were aware you could change an adopted animals name but let it remain Cheddar out of respect for his ‘birth’ parents
Fifth, they named it after the historic village of Cheddar, Somerset in England, unaware people will associate it more with the type of cheese
Sixth, they named him after the hard cheese from Cheedar in Somerset, England due the fact there are both orange and off-white types which parallels their pet’s coloring and Kevin and Raymond both appreciate the nobility of a product which is a cornerstone of a multibillion dollar cheese industry and has a history going back to the 12th century and furthermore
Seventh, Cheddar is the only type of cheese that they both love.
Eighth. Cheddar was Kevin’s mother dog, she chose the name and Kevin, dutiful son that he is, took him off her hands when she developed an allergy to dog dander at 78. Can you imagine? What unbridled weakness, and at her age. You see, Santiago, this why early exposure to allergens of all types is crucial for healthy antibody development and why I made a point to have as many encounters with low-level toxins as possible before my immune system was finished developing. You know, now that you and Peralta are discussing reproducing, you should really consider
