Here’s the thing about shows like South Park and Family Guy that make their money off of being edgy and offensive. They fundamentally reduce their viewers’ capacity for empathy. If I found a joke funny, and you found it offensive, you’re just too sensitive. This is directly related to the ride of the alt right and the election of trump. In this essay I will
OP WHERE’S THE FUCKING ESSAY
So instead of writing the essay this is exactly what I’m talking about. This shit reduces your capacity for empathy. If you can’t understand why people are hurt by a simple joke, nay, think that’s the whole point… How the hell are you supposed to feel for someone when they come to you complaining of ACTUAL oppression? It’s the foot in the door phenomenon. A little oppression isn’t too bad, cuz it’s funny, right? It hardens your heart against others
Somebody actually wrote this essay already. It’s a Twitter thread about how the alt right recruits teenage boys by getting them to post slightly offensive memes… And then when they get called out and don’t understand why the alt right channels their anger at feminists and women and people of color and liberals. According to this thread, boys are being “set up”
Read the whole thread at the link above this is just a snip
“offensive” shows like Family Guy are a precursor to the alt right and you can’t change my mind
Woodstock says a lot about the Baby Boomer generation.
In 1969, 300,000+ young people showed up to the Woodstock music festival. The land being utilized was owned by a farmer. Drugs and inappropriate behavior were rampant, we’ve all seen the notorious photos of the festival goers skinny dipping and walking around naked. ODs and other medical issues were so rampant that the resources of the local emergency services were totally depleted. The National Guard was almost sent in. “Freak out tents” were set up for people on bad trips to be kept away from others. Hygiene was so poor that it was dubbed a crisis. Boomer-produced media portrays these events as cute, funny things done by well meaning young people just having a good time.
On the third day of the festival, the food ran out. Another major crisis was averted when food was charitably provided by locals in the nearby small town, out of their own pantries. The locals received nothing in return for this. Boomer-produced media portrays this as an example of a community “coming together” and “sharing”, some even use Woodstock as evidence that socialism works, referring to Woodstock as a temporary self sustaining country.
After the festival was over, the farmer’s fields were completely destroyed and covered in a sea of trash. A rainstorm the previous day has destroyed many young boomers’ belongings, and they had responded by leaving the destroyed items on the field while they went off to live the rest of their lives, reminiscing about the love, peace, and community they had experienced at Woodstock for decades to come.
Boomers are a plague
While I agree that Woodstock was nothing short of an environmental catastrophe for the local ecosystem, you can’t possibly pretend our generation doesn’t do the exact same goddamn thing
In Australia we dock Merino sheep tails, and perform mulesing at a few weeks old because we have
Lucilia cuprina, a pretty coloured fly with maggots that make a not-so-pretty mess of sheep.
These flies are ubiquitous, they are everywhere in Australia and they cause huge problems. The flies lay their eggs on damp sheep wool, but the maggots will eat both diseased and healthy flesh. The maggots will eat sheep alive.
Short of widespread insecticide use, which doesn’t really control the problem well and has environmental concerns, the most effective method for reducing flystrike in sheep (the maggot infestation) is reducing the amount of moisture that accumulates on the wool. However, even in the driest regions of Australia, sheep will still urinate and develop diarrhea, which moistens regions of their wool.
Crutching sheep, where a small amount of wool is shorn regularly around their anus/vulva to keep it short and clean, certainly can help, but this is most effective in breeds that are relatively smooth skinned, and in smaller enterprises were it’s easier to round up those sheep on a regular basis.
Particularly in the case of Merinos in Australia, with the wrinkly skin around their bottoms, Mulesing is performed to cut this skin off, letting it heal with scar tissue. That’s as rough as it sounds, but it’s necessary to prevent fly strike and death-by-maggots in the sheep’s life.
There have been increasing access and push for pain relief to be used for this procedure, and there are some smooth-skinned lines, or lines of merino with no wool on the perineum. Genetic Mulesing would be ideal, because then no painful procedure would need to be done to the sheep, but there were only 7 Merino originally identified with this trait, and spreading their genetics through the approximately 70 million of Australia…well, it will take time.
So the short answer is that for now these sheep have their tails docked and are Mulesed to prevent being eaten alive by maggots, though the procedure and current husbandry is not ideal and I would prefer to eventually see a genetic solution.
That’s actual wool farmers pushing to make pain relief the standard. The Animal Justice Party had an overseas petition to present, but didn’t need to.
When I graduated there wasn’t a pain relief product available for use in sheep for that purpose without risking drug residues. Now there is, and it would seem producers are quite keen to use it.
