Honestly, I'd love to see an explanation on how the potions work in-universe!! However if you aren't able to fit it into the story, that's totally understandable :)

thank u for the chance to ramble about lore!

first we need to understand monsters and how magic works

[img id: All images will have a lot of text. This one has a drawing of a green moldsmol and a TP ui bar. The background is purple, while all other images are grey. Text from left to right: "origin of all magic is a mystery." Text is drawn under that says Magic?. Next, we have a the moldsmol monster. "a moldsmol is the most basic form of monsters. magic is in a newtonian Liquid state." Next, over the TP Bar: "magic reserve." And then under: "(TP is the measurement of available magic)" Then in 2 pink boxes: Time = Stamina battle turns give monsters time to build TP (energy) to perform certain ACTions or attacks." id end]ALT

[all images have alt id]

We don’t know how monsters first originated. In Angel’s, this is explored through religion (with multiple theories) and a little bit on the actual science and history. but just like how we didn’t understand evolution then, monsters don’t really know how they came about or have a good guess to it

TP is the measurement of one’s magic, which while not directly tied to HP, can influence your HP. which is why Frisk is able to get 30 HP from the snowdin inn.

you need energy (TP) to make magic attacks and to keep your standard max HP value. bullets are made from a monster’s magic reserve, so theoretically if a monster were to use too much bullets it’d take magic from their HP. (like, a negative value from the TP bar that’d then use the HP bar to counter balance the negative because you can’t have negative amount of magic.) Do so enough and you’d convert your literal body into magic attacks until you’re nothing.

that horror aside, it goes to show the magic the body uses is the same magic the attacks use.

[img id: A black puddle is drawn. Text reads "Magic (TP) innate state (not a physical thing that exists.)" Then we see a white monster soul. "SOUL (or sentient dust)". Next there's a black line that becomes a white circle attached to it. SFX: pop. Text reads "when a sentient being uses magic, it's emotions and intents morph the magic into something real." Text is grey that gradually becomes white. We then see an assortment of magic bullets. A white glowing diamond, then Papyrus' bone and Undyne's spear. Then Aaron's sweat and a green water bullet. Text reads "When made into a real thing, it's default state is light." "It can however, be made into a physical or liquid state." "if one were to assign a color to the magic, it's reactive state changes." We then see a Loox eat a pizza similar to pac man. Text reads "Both bullets and monsters gain physical matter from eating food." "Like TP, there is a storage for your physical matter reserve." "This subtly can be measured by the "thickness" of a monster's shell." id end]ALT

light bullets don’t use physical matter and thus are less costly. physical bullets last until broken down (ie: a bone bullet would last a long as a real bone would)

physical bullets also less effective against monsters -the hard realness of the bullet acts as a barrier to the magical intent inside the bullet. This, however, makes these physical bullets a LOT more effective against humans in a fight.

[img id: A white outline of a Loox. Text reads: "Despite being called a "shell" monsters are not hollow." Then we see the outline again, but this time filled in with grey and white dust. "monsters are more like MnM candy." "Coat Shell (MnM hard sugar) They have a thick outer shell that mimics real life textures (fur, skin, scales)" "Inner Shell (MnM chocolate) A mix of gas and dust that swirl inside. The "thickness"" To the far right, the text continues "The "thickness" of the gas/dust ratio is dependent on their food intake and magic bullet usage." "This thickness also builds into the outer shell, so measuring the "skin's" thickness will reflect the Inner Shell's." Below, on the left we see Papyrus' head and Napstablook in white outlines. Text reads "Ghosts and skeleton monsters have very little physical matter. they have a "subspace" where they keep their physical magic. (Doctor Who Tardis logic)" "This process takes magic to function, meaning they need a higher magic diet" ""ghost food" is food that doesn't have a physical plant base." id end]ALT

[img id We see a drawing of a plant and then a pink crystal. Text reads "monster food is made from a mix of plants and a special crystal-made powder." Side note: "*process explained further in Angel's Lullaby" We then see Alphys stand next to a strange machine with a pink bucket at it's end. Text reads "farmers (and later, machines) mix the ingredients with a memory of the food" "Different plants and crystals will give different properties to the food." "Alphys in canon makes ice cream from the wild grass in waterfall." We then see Toriel's head happily declare "I always have organs!" Text reads "boss monsters have a thicker shell and require meat to sustain their bodies." "(This is why the Dreemurrs are the only ones who eat snails)" We then see Toriel with wide eyes and black blood from her mouth. "...and why they bleed when killed." id end]ALT

monsters convert magic based food into magic (and dust) instantly once the food is consumed. when monsters eat magic food, their bodies convert their dust inner shell into organs. Boss Monsters are special and always have these thick-physical organs all the time.

Magic bullets can be broken down into a light and “dispersed” into the air. (Monsters, when they die, also disperse magic into the air which then allows magic crystals to grow.) without monsters in your environment, eventually magic will be near-unusable. Which is why magic is a very rare commodity for only those with a high enough religious ranking. (by Chara’s time)

and now FINALLY we can talk about potions. Cursing and Blessings are status effects that drastically affect a monster’s life. They’re basically equivalents to poison and medicine. (and… kinda also germs. As these can effect places/things)

[img id A monster soul is then pointed to a loox doodle. Text reads "Monster SOUL's emotional state informs magic to take on what form it is given." "when a monster has a bad diet of: * curses * lesser-quality food, * mental illness" it can affect the TP, HP Max, and mind + body of the monster. Can cause illness or even Falling Down." We then see the same Loox in bed, sick and dizzy. Lastly we see Chara hold up a green bottle of a potion. Text reads: "Potions use specifc plants and specifc memories to aid monster's health." "They have a 'blessing' effect to the monster's inner magical workings." "This, when portioned correctly, can moderate a monster's moods and hope" id end]ALT
