genuinely heartbreaking that people don’t think they deserve better than this
This is what internalized oppression looks like. We absorb it and then defend it like agents in The Matrix
Imagine literally typing you’ve never been to a vacation or cinema in Atleast 10 years and just thinking that’s fucking fine
Imagine thinking that working people don’t deserve a place to live unless they have better “skills” Wow!!!
Meanwhile boomers are still saying “I was able to buy a house at 21 working a 40 hour minimum wage job why can’t these lazy millennials do that?”
You know how many vacation days we have in France?? From the get go??? We have 5 weeks paid leave each year since the law was signed in 1982! My boss keeps hassling me to take more vacations and its my first salaried job ever! Americans have been flooded with anti-comunist and anti-union propaganda since the cold war. They live in a coutry that respects companies’s right more than people’s. France is faaaar from being perfect and a lot of worker’s rights are squashed but good lord, the US looks like a distopia from some angles…
:( true
It has nothing to do with skills. Plenty of college graduates work in minimum wage jobs.
Also, the minimum wage was always meant to be the baseline salary a person could earn to live. It isn’t any longer. You cannot expect someone to work a job for all of their available time, regardless of skills (because the jobs exist for a reason and serve a purpose within society) and not have the ability to have basic needs fulfilled. That’s not only daft, it’s cruel. It’s also contrary to everything this country came to represent after the New Deal.
You do not get to assign social value to life forms because you for some reason think yourself more valuable. You do not have the right to sit there and say “I have an important job that only I can do because of my skills and that’s why I deserve to live.”
You also do not have the right to suggest the ridiculous nonsense that people who work minimum wage workers lack skills, or that they can somehow magically acquire them. Skill sets are acquired through schooling, which costs money, but if a person cannot even afford a residence in the modern economy on a low skill job, how then, are they to ever manage to afford schooling?
This person is applying outmoded ideals, models of society, and economic feasibility to people. It is demeaning and vilifying them for not wanting to accrue irresponsible debt, assuming they were even offered money by a predatory lender for schooling.
This type of reasoning is toxic and full of logical fallacy.
People who speak this way paint themselves ignorant and privileged. Don’t take their words to heart. Your privation is better preparing you for economics than their surplus, I assure you.
I work minimum wage, having finally been hired for a job after applying to everywhere for several years (I’m 26 now)
and let me tell you. I make 11.35 an hour. That is NOT even remotely enough for me to get an apartment by myself. Apartments around here are at min. $1,200- ya know if I want a decent place that I don’t have to die of high anxiety/stress from feeling unsafe or just having common household appliances like washer/dryer.
I’m already on Food stamps, so that helps, but I still wouldn’t have enough to afford my own place. I have to be with a roommate and split the rent equally.
Since starting work, I’ve been pushing myself a lot. I wasn’t aiming for a physical job because I know I’m out of shape for it, but I’m so desperate for work that I took it anyway.
It was fine ya know, until I found out the place is highly understaffed- Why? People have been quitting because of the BS going around and the fact that they just aren’t being paid enough to LIVE since everything has risen in price…. So they find jobs in the same field that will pay more. Places that understand that prices have risen and because of such they need to pay their employees more.
So because of all this, they can’t put me in the position they want to put me in (one that is more slow paced, not as physically taxing, and has me interacting with customers more on the floor) since they don’t have the staff to take the time to train me.
What choice do they have now? They put me on Closing Shifts. Starting at typically 3pm or 4pm and not ending until 10pm OR until I get the job done which can be 10:30pm to 11:30pm. It’s extremely physically taxing, nonstop work. My feet and back are constantly killing me, so much so that some days I can’t even get up from bed because of the pain and weakness. I can’t work and finish work without taking pain meds before going to work everyday. I SHOULD NOT have to do that at all, especially because it’s not good for me.
It’s also not like I don’t have skills to get better work :T I do. I have skills in management, communication, socialization, organization, computers, filing, etc. I just have not had any experience to even have a chance to get jobs in any of that. Now I’m getting experience.
My point is, people need to realize ‘minimum wage jobs’ are no different than any other job. People still work themselves to the bone. People still do their best to keep things running even if it’s taxing on them. People do their best to keep customers happy. It really is that companies are unfairly paying them less when they deserve so much more. I don’t mean they need to be paid enough to be rich, but they deserve enough to actually be able to reach the social stigma goals such as “Buying a house” or “Starting a family” because right now that really isn’t possible unless they want loads of debt and to be more or less a struggling family :T
HA
We can’t even afford a 1 bedroom on minimum wage here, it’s ridiculous.
You’re not suppose to live off minimum wage you fucks
If that’s the case then there seriously needs to be regulations placed on companies to stop keeping people on minimum wage indefinitely when they are hired. Like maybe minimum of a month of work before their wage get raised.
Because more often than not, companies use minimum wage as an excuse to not pay their employees what they deserve and just uses it as cheap labor.
EVEN THOUGH WE WORK EXTREMELY HARD, GIVE 120%, DO OUR ABSOLUTE BEST, AND KEEP THE BUSINESS RUNNING
minimum wage was literally created so that a single person could raise a family of four off of one persons income
Don’t let the media hide the fact that this was direct action by the dispossessed (in this case working class Black and Asian, mainly immigrants, people in England) fighting for other dispossessed people.
Maybe misusing the name of God isn’t so much about saying the shallow words, “Oh my God,” as it is about using the name of God to justify discrimination, oppression, injustice, racism, slavery, xenophobia, poverty, sexism, islamophobia, ableism, homophobia, war, & the list can go on.
Amen
When I was a wee little Gaslight attending Catholic Sunday schools, and then later in college when I was taking a Bible as Literature class, both my stolid neighborhood deacon and my dapper Protestant professor said almost the exact same thing:
“Taking the Lord’s name in vain isn’t when someone says ‘God damn it.’ It’s when a mortal, fallible human being presumes to put words in God’s mouth and say ‘This is what God wants you to do.’“
