It’s actually not for the benefit of kids at all. In fact, Alex Hirsch and many other people in the industry have said their corporate higher-ups have no problem with the idea of kids seeing same-sex couples and are not afraid of parental backlash stateside.

The actual reason is the overseas market, which companies depend on too heavily to want to risk pissing off. There’s a post going around that explains it better.

Creators are pushing what they can and their networks aren’t really their enemies anymore, but there’s political, not parental red tape that needs to be fought on levels beyond the power of cartoons
