It’s actually not for the benefit of kids at all. In fact, Alex Hirsch and many other people in the industry have said their corporate higher-ups have no problem with the idea of kids seeing same-sex couples and are not afraid of parental backlash stateside.

The actual reason is the overseas market, which companies depend on too heavily to want to risk pissing off. There’s a post going around that explains it better.
