I always just assumed that since her father hated/feared benders so much that he would have put her through rigorous self defense training in order to protect herself. He would have been horrified at the thought of losing her to them as well. Maybe this is the result we see here?

I think it’s more a difference in combat style. Benders are all about proper posing. You need range and can’t be constantly dodging. The Equalist trained they’re troops to take on benders. Asami trained to take on anybody.

Benders rely on their bending which the equalists are trained to be able to counter. To fight an equalist, you cannot use bending.
