50 Shades of Attempting to Pass Abuse Off as Romance

boycott this film. let everyone know how this film glorifies abuse.

I find these quotes disturbing.

Can we talk about how this was a Twilight fanfic? Twilight. The book that teens, moms, middle schoolers, and a shit ton of other people were reading? Hell my grandmother read it. And the fact that it was a Twilight fanfiction spawning something this abusive speaks VOLUMES about it.

Because let me tell you something about fanfic authors. Fanfic authors are the ones who get the characters. Really get them. They analyze them and dissect them and develop their own headcanons and get into the character’s mind until they can more or less kinda think they know what a character would do if they were in an AU or a specific situation within the show’s canon. Now not every interpretation is perfect and not everyone gets the characters right, but I know from experience that if you don’t write the characters well your fanfiction isn’t going to be popular since your characters are your bread and butter anyway. So for Fifty Shades of Bullshit to not only get popular enough to get published but also GET A MOVIE I’d certainly say people thought the characters were accurate (I’ve never read it so I can only assume. Besides it’s not like Bella and Edward were complex anyway.)

So. The characters are accurate in their portrayal/interpretation in this weird business bdsm AU. So what? For those of you that don’t know, bdsm is not meant to be an abusive relationship. It’s meant to give the sub a feeling of being used and the dom the feeling of being in control because that’s what they get off to. In reality, they’re on pretty equal ground as far as control. If anything the sub is in more control than the dom since a good dom is supposed to honor safewords, which are there to tell the dom when the sub has had enough or is starting to feel unsafe. THAT is a healthy dom/sub relationship. THIS is not.

So, what does this say about Twilight? That means Twilight was a book so knee-deep in making abuse look okay, that no-one even blinked when this fanfic was written, and even cheered it. That means a PUBLISHING COMPANY HAD TO LOOK OVER IT and went “Yeah that’s cool to sell and market as a romance novel (which by the way are NEVER this kinky when they are on a normal bookstore shelf.)” That means that Twilight has taught a generation of teen girls that this is how your “true love” is supposed to treat you, and to shun the nice guy who is your friend because you love the abusive asshole.

I once said that there was a reason romance books shouldn’t get movies, but after thinking about it I realized thy do in the form of romantic comedies. This? This shouldn’t exist. Ever. And I pity those who will go to this movie or read this book or Twilight and walk away thinking “Yes. That’s the way it should go.”

Twilight has a very abusive relationship to the point where one person feels like she needs to attempt suicide just to get her partners attention.
